I have been told that there is a Christian Hoffenbacher (b 1846?) buried in Eagle Harbor Cemetary. Is there an index for burials there or some other way to get information on the deceased?
Alicia, I didn't know that your dad was having surgery, but I told my mom, and of course she already knew. Gramps is doing well with his hip recovery. I will be up this summer, so we will have to get together. I should be there for a month or so. Are you sure of the photographer's name? There was a Victor Herman that was listed as a photographer in the Polk directories from about 1886 to 1910 in Calumet but no Merman. Have no idea what became of the Herman photography shop, only wondered about the name. Jack. Marion Markham wrote: > I have a photograph taken at Merman Studio in Calumet, probably around > 1890. Hi Pat, Have you used the search engine on the Houghton site? Many early graves of the Scandanavians were marked with an iron cross only . Your best bet is to check the court house, MTU archives and Finlandia archives of course. Many original cemetery lists are lost and newer ones are imcomplete. The death records from the Peterson Funeral home i am doing will add many to the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet that were not recorded. Hello Alicia, I am sure all of us are sorry to hear about your Father. Do take care. I am wondering if you can suggest which cemetery would be a likely burial place for Finns or Norweigans who lived in and around Calumet. Thanks for any help. I can't find out anything more about my great grandparents marriage. I do have a copy of the churches registry entry for it, a friend sent it to me, and a copy of their certificate. The only question I have is, why would they get married in a Polish church? As they were not Polish. I am still not sure if they had already been married when they arrived here, they could have had to be married again so they would have a marriage certificate here in the states. It is also very possible that they destroyed all of their original papers.
Hi, One option is to call every cemetery in Houghton county and see if they have your names on a burial list. Here is the court house information: Houghton County Vital Records OfficeHoughton County Clerk 401 East Houghton Avenue Houghton, MI 49931 (906) 482-1150 Houghton County Historical Museum Society Highway M-26 Lake Linden, MI 49945 Rec Type Cost Dates Form Remarks Birth $8.00 1867 to present only available to person on record, parents of registrant, legal guardian, legal representative or an heir. Death $8.00 1867 to present Marriage $8.00 1855 to present Alicia
Alicia, Thanks. I was hoping that there was a cemetery connected with the town of Houghton. I suspect they may actually have lived in Hancock. I just discovered that my emails aren't always getting through. So I will try again. According to an obit, some of my MacDonald line who died in Illinois were sent back to Houghton (town, I believe) to be buried. Does anyone know what cemetery that might have been and how I might get information? The wife was Laura MacDonald, who married Garrett Johnston. I believe that both were from Houghton area. Also, is it still $8.00 to order a B.C. (for the above) or has the price gone up. TIA Marion Markham
Hi, I am passing this site along for MTU archive holdings and what they have available. Naturalizations are also listed here and if you scroll to the bottom you will get the home page along with the explanation for charges. My father is having surgery and i will not be doing lookups till he is recovered. Alicia Marshall http://www.lib.mtu.edu/mtuarchives/statearchives.htm
I found this on a Keweenaw site, Antoine Eister carried the first mail between Central and Phoenix Mr Monette did not write too much personal information. They tell more historical data.
