    2. Tom
    3. I would like to ask a favor of anyone who would have access to an index for the 1920 Census schedules for Houghton Co., and for South Range in particular. The name would be Henry (Heikki) METSA. Henry appears to have been my grandfather's brother. I am curious to know if Henry's year of arrival in the States and year of naturalization are shown in the schedule. I have so far been foiled in my attempts to find my grandfather's naturalization papers, but it seems to me that I might be able to learn something of the family from his brother's papers, assuming I could find them. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/2FB.2ACI/1929.1 Message Board Post: Try this link. It might get U started. U may have to read a little bit. Houghton is part of the diocease of Marquette. http://habitant.org/houghton/fcgenealogy.htm#Part%20IV These Houghton County parishes are part of the Diocese of Marquette. The Diocese has an Office of Archivist-Historian, Ministry of Remembrance, St. Christopher Parish, 2372 Badger St., Marquette, MI 49855 (906) 226-2265. Several years ago the diocese microfilmed the existing parish registers and stored the copies in the diocesan office. These microfilmed parish registers are not indexed. This office is closed to public use. Nevertheless, specific written inquiries will be answered at a minimum charge ($20.00 in 1983, I would imagine you should send $25 to $30 in 2000) to initiate a search. Should more time be required presumably an additional amount would be charged. This office has limited funds and staff which must be used on regular church business. Genealogical research will only be done as time permits. State of Michigan Death Certificate Request Link: http://www.mdch.state.mi.us/PHA/OSR/DEATHAPP.HTM REQUESTING A MICHIGAN DEATH RECORD The Michigan Vital Records office has records of deaths that occurred in Michigan and were filed with the state since 1867. Some of the records were not filed with the state; more records are missing from the pre-1916 files. Anyone is eligible to request a copy of a Michigan death record if the application is completed and signed and the required fee paid. 1. [MIHOUGHT] Naturalizations
    2. My grandfather and great grandfather came from Michigan to Lancaster County Ne in 1877 and I found their Michigan naturalization records in with the local Nebraska applications. Perhaps they had to prove they were citizens to vote or something of that nature. It is a long shot but I was surprised to find a number of Michigan applications in with our local ones. Also would heartily recommend the book "Beyond the Boundaries" by Larry Lankton. It does not give a lot of family information but is a great book to find out about the life in the UP from 1840-1875, I ordered it through Barnes and Noble but I would guess any book store could do the same. 2. About naturalizations in Houghton County. The State Archives does not have all of the naturalizations (circuit court) from all of the counties. But what they have has been indexed by volunteers. MTU is the place where Houghton records should be, but some counties want to hang on to their (circuit court) records. Western Michigan Univ. might also have naturalization records for their area. Nancy

    3. Some time ago, someone recommended books by Larry Lankton. However, to get my library to buy a copy, I need a publisher and an ISBN number. I went online and found the books but not the necessary information. Also listed was a book Professsor Lankton collaborated on. It is called: Old Reliable, An Illustrated History of the Quincy Mining Company. Author: Larry D. Lankton & Charles K. Hyde. Does anyone have a copy of this book? I would buy it if I thought any of my relatives -- McRae, McDonald, or McLeod -- were mentioned. I know that Dr. Alex McRae treated men injured in a mine accident and thought he might have been included. If the book is indexed with names, I would appreciate a lookup. I think I'm getting close to putting the pieces together! TIA Marion Markham
