    3. Hi Tom, I found this site, it cites when the Homesteading act came into effect. It does mention Naturalization ("if needed") so to me it is unclear weather it was a prerequisite. http://www.geocities.com/badamscecomcom/huroncounty/homestead.html Alicia Marshall I just realized that I don't know whether or not citizenship was a prerequisite to land ownership (timeframe early 1900s). If it was, what might have been required for an immigrant to demonstrate their citizenship status should they have wanted to buy a home, farm, or other real estate. >>

    1. Re: [MIHOUGHT] Land Ownership
    2. Tom I didn't see any response to this interesting question. Illinois and Iowa ancestors from the mid 19 century owned land some 10 or so years prior to final papers. If that would be the case in other states or later years, I don't know. 2. Why don't you check the films for death records that may have been filmed by the Salt Lake Geneolical Society go to www.familysearch.org go to library and then to catalog put in michigan houghton. I'm looking at a film right with deaths from 1901 to 1911. you can do this from your nearest Family History Center if they don't have the film you want there you can order it for about $3.00 Kay earlnkay@aol.com

    3. Even before the message ended up back in my mailbox, I learned that John McLed, alive in 1910, wasn't in the 1920 census. I know the cost of a DC is $8.00. Is there an additional cost for a search if I don't have the exact date? Marion Markham

    2. Marion Markham
    3. I am hoping that someone can take a look at the 1920 census for Quincy. I know that John McLeod, his wife Christie, and three grown children -- Murdock, Christie, and Jane -- lived there in 1910. If John is dead by 1920, it would narrow down the search to find a date of death. I desparately need his DC to see who his parents were. Marion

    3. Colleen, Thanks for the McLeod information. What does AL mean? Now to get back to the McDonalds. The only James McDonald I could find on the 1880 census close to the right age was a carpenter married to Jane McDonald with a one year old son named John F. McDonald, born in Canada. Jane must have died before you found him living with Sarah in the 1900 census. If you can find the family in any later census, I would appreciate it. 3. Colleen, From the 1870 census: John & Margaret McDonald, parents. Children: Donald, 20, James, 17, John 15, Angus, 12, Margaret 11, Ronald 8, Mary, 5. All born in Scotland except Mary, who was born in Michigan. So, by 1900 Angus would have been around 42. He had a daughter, Lorna/Laura in 1893 with Lillian, but Lilliam might have died before 1900. Or her name may have looked like something else on the census. Laura was known in my family as Lolie, which could also be a nickname for Lillian. The Scots are so confusing because they kept reusing names. The trail is even muddier back on the Isle of Skye where they all came from. As always, thanks. 3. Hi, 1900 has 5 Angus's in Houghton county or surrounding counties and 1910 has 3. What would Angus's age been in these years? None with a wife Lillian. Did Angus have a brother James? 3. I received the McDonald Death Certificates I ordered and they have raised several questions. Margaret McDonald died May 5, 1887. She is listed as married. Jonathan McDonald died two years later, Aug. 19, 1889. There are several possibilities. Either he is not the John McDonald that she was married to, although the ages seem right. The certificate is wrong and he was widowed. He married someone else after Margaret died. Unless someone can find another John McDonald on the 1900 census for Quincy, I will have to assume that he is the right one. The other puzzle was that they couldn't find a DC for Margaret's son Angus. Could someone please check in 1900 and/or 1910 for Angus McDonald and his wife Lillian. I think I asked for this lookup before but never got it -- unless my computer dumped it. TIA Marion Markham

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/2FB.2ACI/101.9.1 Message Board Post: The four Remillard brothers; Narcisse, Joseph, Celestin and Prosper are found in 1880 census of Houghton County, MI (ED #8, Schoolcraft Township), under the surname "Ramelland". Only "Cellestine" is married (to Louisa). They have sons Edmund, Joseph, Willie and Philias. Celestin's three brothers are living in his household and are all single. Ages, names, etc match very well to known facts. (Prosper is called "Prapane".)

    3. I just realized that I don't know whether or not citizenship was a prerequisite to land ownership (timeframe early 1900s). If it was, what might have been required for an immigrant to demonstrate their citizenship status should they have wanted to buy a home, farm, or other real estate. This question came to mind as I have been trying to think of alternate avenues of approach in my ongoing search for my grandfather's naturalization papers. William Metsa was for a time a mine employee in Houghton Co. (in Baltic if I remember correctly)--this was about 1910ish. By the 1920 Census he's on a farm near Chassell. William did naturalize in 1912, according to the census entry. The print on my copy of the census schedule is not clear, but I believe it shows that William was owner of the farm (mortgaged). The farm is still owned and occupied by the widow of one of William's sons. Unfortunately, she was unable to help me with any history of the Metsa family. Now I am wondering if there is any chance that land records held in Houghton Co. would contain hints about William's naturalization. Tom Osborn Rancho Santa Margarita, CA
