The info about Wayne County is not entirely correct. The Detroit Health Dept has only the Detroit births and deaths. Records for other cities in Wayne County are maintained by the Wayne County Clerk's office. You must know the city involved to have them look up anything. Personally, I think it would be a waste of time to write to either Detroit or Wayne County and expect to get a reply. Their prices are higher and personnel don't exhibit a lot of cooperation even when you're standing in front of them. Some of the local communities maintain birth and death records esp. if there is or was a hospital located in that community. tkerwin@fciconnect.com wrote: > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/2FB.2ACI/1940.1 > > Message Board Post: > > Death cert. will list parents names (if given). I had a different experience with the Detroit Health Dept. I ordered a DC -- cheaper than the state charges. Since I had only the year but not an exact date of death, they sent me one for someone who died in January. I didn't think it was mine, so I sent another check and explained that it was the wrong man. They returned my money order to me after checking and telling me that they couldn't find another one. I was very surprised to get the money order back. Most places would have kept it and sent an "Unable to locate" message. I guess it all depends on the day and who you get. I can not agree with you John D. I have never had a problem getting Death Certificates from the the MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OH HEALTH Bureau of Records and Statistics in Lansing,MI They have ALL of MICHIGAN! I do agree they are high, much higher than other states. And also, when I get ready to pay for information, I have a pretty good idea what citied I am looking for information in. Church records are a great source, if you know their church. If you are using a computerized search with Ancestry.com or Genealogy.com; try misspelling the last name. Names were frequently misspelled by the census taker as well as the transcriber who created the data base. Always search for the "head of household"; usually the husband's 1st name.

I have started to transcribe the Keweenaw births in the first volume from the county clerk records. Finally got the beginning online last night at: http://www.mfhn.com/keweenaw/kew_births/ The above are also indexed with a link in the Early Michigan Birth database at: http://www.mifamilyhistory.org/mfhn_births/ The above has a large amount of births in it that Betty has indexed from obituaries for Houghton, Keweenaw and surrounding areas. Michigan Death database: http://www.mifamilyhistory.org/mfhn_deaths/ Houghton researchers should keep a look out in surrounding counties for their vitals also. There are some good research tips that are coming through on the Houghton list. Glad to see them. My emigrants purchased land in Ontonagon county shortly after arriving in the UP from England (mid 1850's). One died without obtaining citizenship. The women, never gained citizenship, but continued to own land. Rules for receiving land in government "give away" programs probably vary from program to program. Some land, known as bounty lands, were given in payment of service to the country during a time of war. Most of the government programs served the purpose of moving the population westward..... It is a very great place to get films and fiche, they also have a booklet that is free for the asking that has a step by step how to start your family history. By the way I think the films are $3.50 each and the fiche are .15 cents a piece. Sometimes when you run into a brick wall and don't know what to do about a peace of your puzzle there is someone there may be able to help you to find a way through your problem, so I would highly recommend a trip to your nearest Family History Center or go on-line at. www.familysearch.org I hope that all your searches are happy ones.
