I was shown an aerial photo of about a quarter of the cemetery from about 1930, and can't believe that there aren't others around. Would anyone have any information on where photo's might be found or whom I might contact to try and find them? I have searched Michigan Tech. and checked with the Kew. Historical Society without succuss. Would anyone know of some old-timers in and around Calumet that would have photo's of the area? Perhaps a bulletin board at a Senior center or at one of the local Church's where I might post a message? Any contacts or information would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely Greg Skoviak
You can further research some of the Minnesota connections by using the online death index at www.mnhs.org<http://www.mnhs.org/> You can order death certificates from the site, which show the parents of the deceased (if the informant knew them), which may enable you to make the link. I have to say, it caught my eye that some had gone on to Pierce Co., Washington, too -- there is quite a lot of connection of German-Bohemians, one of the subsets of Austrians, moving between St. Paul, Minnesota and Pierce Co. I will definitely look into the history! Frank and Barbara had moved to Pierce Co Washington by 1890 ( I have land records supporting this) They appear in the 1910 census as Arzada, Barbara and Lena (daughter) Brown, living next door to their daughter, Anna Heilig. Barbara appears in 1920 living with Anna (my 2nd g-grandmother) and her family. Franke Aurzada (the son), does not appear again after the 1880 census. I had always assumed he died as a child until I spoke recently with Lena's daugher-in-law. She confirmed that Franke (the son) lived into the 1960's. Also, I found funeral records for Frank and Barbara - The ages on the 1880 census are consistent with the funeral records) Also, the responsible next of kin listed was "Frank Oswald". It's only a hunch, but I'm wondering if this is their son, "Franke". This would support the theory that he was from a previous marriage -Just a theory though! As for Joseph M. Aurzada and Elizabeth, I discovered them through photos belonging to my g-grandmother (F & B's granddaughter) My great-grandmother's writing on the photos indicate who they were and how they were related. I've since found birth records for Elizabeth, but nothing for Joseph (nicknamed "Red Cane"). It's possible Joseph was a relative raised by Frank and Barbara, instead of their snatural son. There are other Aurzada's listed in Calumet, MI at the same time as my relatives. They moved on to Minnesota. There is probably a link between the two families, but I haven't found it yet! *************************************** This is a themed mail list for discussion of genealogical research and the history of Houghton Co. Teresa, Hi Teresa! I believe that is the one that is only names of adult males. It is the strangest State census I have evewr seen. I can check for you on Weds. what it contains for sure if they still have it at the local Family History Library in Mt. Pleasant, MI. I haven't looked at it in awhile but it seems it was hard to go through. Try: _http://www.mfhn.com/houghton/foresthill/default.asp_ (http://www.mfhn.com/houghton/foresthill/default.asp) There is a Margaret and Henry Schneider buried there. Also two Katherine Ruhl. Also: _http://www.mfhn.com/houghton/cemeteries.asp_ (http://www.mfhn.com/houghton/cemeteries.asp) for a list of Houghton County Cemeteries. Try: _http://www.mfhn.com/keweenaw/_ (http://www.mfhn.com/keweenaw/) for Keweenaw cemeteries. There is only one cemetery at Eagle Harbor. Ask someone for directions. It is out a dirt (last time I was there) road in the woods about 1/4 mile from town. According to the above web site, there are a number of Hoffenbeckers buried there. Hello Bob, Cemeteries are located here for Keweenaw county http://www.mfhn.com/keweenaw/index.html And here for Houghton county http://www.mfhn.com/houghton/index.html As for pasties, that I would suppose it a matter of taste. I have heard that Sheldon's bakery in Houghton are very good. You will have to try a few, at different places and you can judge them. Enjoy the visit. She was born in 1920 and I have many of her pictures from the 30's and 40's(she went to oregon in 1949. Eleanor Makela was one of her friends who is in many pictures. I think there is a Helen or Hilma Ketturi? My mother was the youngest in her family, her parents were John and Tillie Isaacson. I will have to look it up. I actually think one of the Ketturi girls was one of my mother's best friends.Hilma? Do you want me to send pictures? I have a lot of the names on them. My mother died in 1980, but thankfully I asked her about the pictures in 1977 and we went through and put names on most all of them. Only a few had names on them before that...so I would have been at a loss as to who was who! My mother's sisters names were Laina, Verna, Helen, Lydia, and Alma. Her brothers were Art and Gusti(Johnny). Laina died a few years ago and Verna died in the 1990's. The rest died ear! lier. My mother's aunt, Mae Moilanen, was still alive but in a nursing home in Hancock as of a couple years ago. I did write to her and her niece wrote back, but I haven't written her in quite a while so I don't know how she is. She would be in her 90's. Most of their family is buried in Laminga cemetary.I live in oregon, but I did go there once in 1977, to Beacon Hill, Laminga, and Hancock. Beautiful area.
