Thanks for trying! The first of the family members seem to have left for the US around 1848-1850 but they may have first gone through Canada since I have found one person in Canada with the family name. My great grandmother's sailing trunk (we think she arrived around 1853) is stenciled: "M. Hoffenbecher uber New Iork" (i.e., New York) so we think she came direct. However, she was a teenager at that time so she may have been traveling with relatives possibly not named Hoffenbacher. Bob in California

Fridolin "Fred" Smith in 1855 to Copper Harbor . Can you please do a look-up on him? From Bavaria. As you can imagine there are about 100 variations of Fred Smith. Do you have an approximate age he might have been. He may have come over in say 1854 and not arrived in Copper Harbor until 1855. There aren't any arrivals for 1854. Jean: My first German relatives came over (most settled in Michigan) between about 1848 and 1883. There is only one family name but many spelling variations as shown below. By using German parish records I have confirmed that all of these spelling were used by the same immediate family. Also, the name(s) is (are) are even in Germany so virtually anyone of them is probably a relative. Some went first to England, others to Canada, but my great grandmother, sister and uncles seem to come directly to the US and then up to Michigan. The earliest spelling I have found in Hofenbecher but that later became: Hoffenbecher Hoffenbächer Hoffenbacher (in the US and England) Hoffenbecker (in the US) Hoffenbacker (a 1940s spelling change) Bob Peck California
