Does anyone know if there was an Asylum for TB in the U.P.?
Just a comment on missing husbands-- I have found a few sometimes by widening the search. Of course, he may just have some job that takes him away a lot. But the ones I recall specifically, were guys away at some institution. These were especially veterans in some kind of home, a tip-off to look more for their military records, and occasionally in insane or tuberculosis asylums. Some of the veterans' homes were in other states from the rest of the family. Also, most of the immigrant communities just didn't really do divorce, so couples sometimes simply went their separate ways. I also wonder if the name Mendelin might sometimes be shortened to the more common Mendel (in fact, in German, the "-in" ending is a feminine ending in old times, so wife/daughter have name Lexin, guys Lex, for example). Here in Minn., I have found some men going up to lumber camps in the north for the spring/summer season, though living in the city in the winter -- but the census was during the time up north. Hi Pat, I guess that Julia must have refused to believe that she was divorced as Edward and Hilia are in Detroit in 1930, no children listed. Now even more confusing is that Edward states that he came to here in 1910.He must have just forgotten when he immigrated maybe. His exwife Julia had five children in less than ten years . His last one was born in 1919 so they must have gotten divorced between then and 1920. Alicia
I believe the name Hiljia was the Scandinavian form of Julia - pronounced with sort of a 'breathy' sound. General index to Circuit Court calendars, A-Z, 1853-1973 FHL US/CAN Film 1901929 I am not sure if the records are at the courthouse in Houghton, the Michigan State Archives or Michigan Tech University's archives. If you have a date it might be worth contacting the Houghton Co. Courthouse. I have written the circuit court in the past and they were very nice and quite quick in their reply to me on a divorce I was looking for. Yours would be interesting to get ahold of and read through. You helped me rule out some bad info. It looks like Henrietta became a widow in Nov.1869 when Charles Warner shot and killed Joseph Lorenz in Houghton Village. In 1870 Warner was found not guilty of manslaughter per the Portage Lake Mining Gazette. It must have been an interesting trial. I wonder if there are court records from those times? Thanks again - Chuck McArthur
