Could you tell me the difference of asylum and orphanage? Other then one sounds nicer and over time the word asylum was changed to orphanage. That sounds flipy and not ment to, but it is a question I've had! Do you have any ideas how I can get the records on Justino and Wilbert Garreau? I don't know where to write. D. Meyer

Under Ben and Maud Whaley; Cadillac, MI. Using what I have always known to be his middle name. So in this census it is: Justin Whaley, boarder and in the margin with an arrow pointing to his name is writen "boy from children's home". I know this is grandfather, I remember hearing him speak of Ben and Maud. Not very good, when I would question, he would shut right up. He also remembered being in an orphanage before the foster home. Said it was in Detroit, MI. So I looked in the 1910 census found St. Vincent's Orphanage; Detroit, MI. Listed is a Justino Garreau - age 5, nothing more. The story Raymond said, that was told to him by Ben and Maud Whaley, was that his father died and his mother could not care for all the children (number ?) on her own. So she put them in the orphanage with the understanding they were never to be adopted out, foster homes they could go to. Ben and Maud Whaley never had children of their own. This is my brickwall. 1930 census you will find: Raymond Garrow; Elmira, Otsego Co., Michigan. D. Meyer

He was married to a 2nd wife Lottie Dickinson. I never knew that grandfather was married before, until I got a copy of his and Lottie's marriage registry. One of the questions on this registry was, Number of times married before and by Raymond's name it was marked 1. They were married in 1926. The following information was told to me by my father. My grandfather Raymond Garrow was raised by foster-parents in Cadillac, MI. They had Raymond's 1st marriage anulled. Never knew when this marriage took place or for how long or if ever a child became of it. D. Meyer

Hello, Regarding the discussion about traveling to Houghton area. I went there a couple of years ago and 2 days was not enough time. If you can try to stay longer. We went to several museums, the beach (to keep the kids interested), a couple of old mines, a little bit of fishing. I never did make it to MTU archives. I would definitely like to go back and continue researching. Well I am not sure about calumet having any vital records but Houghton houses records at the Houghton County Courthouse in which you can look up Death, Marriage and Naturalization records but you have to call before showing up because they have limited space (906) 482-1150 (is their number). Then, also in Houghton is the MTU Archives and they have polk directories, census, newspapers on microfilm and a whole lot of information and records and there are really nice people to help you find just about anything. Their web page is http://www.lib.mtu.edu/mtuarchives/ Check out what is available at the archives. Houghton is about 12 miles from Calumet. I live in Laurium and work at MTU so I visit the archives about once a week. Marjorie ([email protected])

I live in Laurium and work at MTU and I am always in the Courthouse and the archives at least once a week for people who have been hiring me to copie and look up records. I was trying to help the lady yesterday who wanted to visit calumet and have records looked up in calumet and I don't know of anything in calumet to look up so I replied by saying that Houghton county courthouse has records to look up Death, marriage and Naturalization and the MTU Archives house a whole lot of information and I put the web page on the archives so she could prepare before coming to Calumet. But I couldn't post an answer to her yesterday it wouldn't take my posts.?? but it took new ones so I posted the new one. I Hope this post is a clearer one. If this posts then I can try to answer hers again.

I saw on the list the collections available at the Houghton Co. Courthouse the state census for Houghton Co. 1874 is available. I'm wondering if someone on this list who lives there could check two families for me on that census. The names are John Lampsa with wife Margretta. Also Margretta's sister Maria Liisa & her husband Henry Hendrickson. Thanks so very much. Judy in CA
I have the disc from Family Tree Maker entitled "Germans to America, 1850 to 1874". I will be glad to do a look-up for anyone for that time period of arrival. Please put your surname in the subject and send it to my private e-mail address: [email protected] Hope I can help someone. Jean
Sorry to disagree with this posting. My great grandfather worked for the Tamarack Mining Company. The records for this company are NOT in the C&H Mine employment records. They are filed separately, as are other mining company records. If your search does not find the record you want with the C&H Company, check the other companies as well. C&H did not take over all the other mining companies until the 1910s or 1920s.
