I have just located the US Census for 1910 - 1930. My purpose is to try to find living cousins related to my 3rd great grandfather's brother who moved from Columbia County, New York to Hillsdale County and ultimately to Hillsdale City. It looks like the last two known generations were women in this historically long family. Amos King married Hopestill Haskins in 1781 at New Salem, Hampshire County (now Franklin County) Massachusetts. Amos died in 1839 at New Lebanon. Amos and Hopestill had 10 or more children all of whom have not been named or found. My 3rd great grandfather Nahum Amos King married Sarepta Norton (daughter of James Alexander and Dulianna Howe Norton) is the oldest born 25 July 1783. He brought his family to Oregon in 1845. His brother Luther might be one of the youngest of the brood. Luther remained in or near New Lebanon until his father died. He married in New York to Emmaline (nee ?) then moved to Wilson in Niagara County, New York and is listed with children John F. age 18 and Elizabeth age 16 in the 1850 census. The family headed by Luther is then listed in 1860 at Newfane, Niagra County, New York. John F. is living in the household married to Roxanna (born in Canada) they have 1 daughter Emmy age 1. Elizabeth is no longer in the household. A brief history that has been published showed that they were also in Indiana before coming to Hillsdale County where they are enumerated in the census of 1870. John F. King is the head of the house at that time with daughters Emmy age 11 and Hattie age 8 in 1870 Luther and Emmaline are living with them in retirement. The 1880 census for Hillsdale City, Hillsdale County 4th ward lists Luther is 73 and Emmaline is 71 as the head of the house. They are living on Brown Street. John F. is 49 and his wife Roxanne is 45. One daughter Hattie age 17 is living in the house at that time. (A Henry J. King family is living next door but I do not think that they are related or are not known at this time). As you know the 1890 census to not survive an act of Congress to destroy the census punch cards by fire. Their were no original tabulations taken by the enumerators. The 1900 census for Hillsdale County, Hillsdale City do not indicate that Luther or Emmaline are living. The household of John F. age 68 and Roxanna age 65 do not show any children living with them. The 1910 census for Hillsdale County, Hillsdale City again in the 4th ward shows the head of the house is Russell Peterson age 54 with wife Emma T. King age 51. Emma lists 2 children born with 1 living. Roxanna King a widow is living in the house. Roxanna lists 2 children born with 1 living since Emma is listed I assume that Hattie her sister has died. Hattie K. King age 22 is married to Carlton W. Woods. Carlton and Hattie K have been married for 1 year. The 1920 census for Hillsdale County, Hillsdale City taken in January 1920 lists Russell W. (age 64) and Emma (King) age 60 Peterson as the head of the house. Roxanna King (Widow) is 84. No children are listed. The 1930 census for Hillsdale County, Hillsdale City taken in April 1930 shows Russell W. age 74 and Emma (King) age 70 Peterson on Budlong Street in the 4th ward. They have been married since Emma was 19 years old. Can any one tell me of the family from recollections of the couple in the years 1910 to 1930 is the house still standing on Budlong Street? Do any of you listers know of Carlton W and Hattie K. (Peterson) Woods. After all that here is their lineage is case anyone is researching the family. We know that someone was or is researching the King line from Hillsdale in 1972. Children of Carlton W. and Hattie K. Woods (10); Hattie K. (Peterson) Woods (9), Emma T. (King) Peterson (8); John F. King (7); Luther King (6); Amos King (5); William King Sr. (IV) (4); Jonathan King Sr. (3); John King Sr. (2), William King Sr. (1) with wife Dorothy Dible married 16 Janaury 1621/1622 at St. John the Baptist Parish Church, Yeovil, Somersetshire, England.
