The 1942 minutes of the VanScoy-Knapp reunion say "Those present from a distance were - Mr. & Mrs. D. G. Fancher & daughter Gwendolyn of Hillsdale, Mich . . ." I can't place this family. Mary Ann VAN SCOY, daughter of Abraham Van Scoy and his wife Mary Knapp, was born in New York, probably Westchester County, in 1816. She married in 1833, in Huron County, Ohio, William FANCHER, son of Thaddeus Fancher and his wife Sally MEAD. They were living in Greenwich Township, Huron County, Ohio, in 1850 and 1860 and in Camden Township, Hillsdale County, Michigan in 1870 and 1880. They had 2 sons, Thaddeus William born 1839 and George born 1848, and 6 daughters. Thaddeus William Fancher and wife Ermina Griffin were living in Lorain, Ohio, in 1880. They had two children, a son Elvadore and a daughter Millicent Alfre. Elvadore was born in 1864. He married Harriet L. SCHROEDER. He appears on a list of "members not attending" the 1907 VanScoy-Knapp reunion as "Mr. Elvador R. Fancher 1902 East 93st Cleveland Ohio". I don't know whether they had children. George Fancher was born in 1848. At the 1870 census he was living in Camden Township, Hillsdale County, Michigan, with his father William Fancher. At the 1880 census he was a widower living with his daughters Mary (age 7) and Adah (age 5) next door to his father and step-mother. I don't know anything about him after 1880. (I don't think he is the George A. Fancher in Springport Township, Jackson County, Michigan, in the 1910 census.) Am I missing a Fancher line from William and Mary Ann (Van Scoy) Fancher? Lucinda SHELDON, daughter of Mary DURY and her husband William Fenner Sheldon and granddaughter of Sally Ann VAN SCOY and her husband James Dury, was born 7 April 1860 in Ohio (probably Greenwich Township, Huron County). In 1880 she was living with her parents in Amboy Township, Hillsdale County, Michigan. She married Willam SALMON about 1888 (based on her age of 22 at marriage as given in the 1930 census). He was born about 1853 in New York. They were living (sometime recorded as Solomon) in Camden Township, Hillsdale County, Michigan, at each census of 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930. They had two children (according to family reunion records; both appear in the 1900 and 1910 census records): Bertha Evelene, born 21 April 1884 (but she might be William's child from an earlier unknown to me marriage) Charles Kenneth, born 23 March 1897 I am looking for more information about these two children and am especially interested in corresponding with living descendants. Greetings, I am researching the possibility that Walter Wm Campbell and Persilla J(ennie) Havens may be the parents of my grgrandmother Myrtle Maude Campbell. Walter and "Jennie" were married in Hillsdale County in 1876 (LDS extracted records); they are shown in the 1880 census with son Marvin born 1879. Marvin is listed in the 1900 census in Hillsdale County without his parents; the 1910 census in Montana with wife and children and the 1920 census in Hillsdale County; he cannot be found in the 1930 census (his wife Carrie and children are found in Hillsdale but she has remarried - so is Marvin deceased?) Marvin's 1905 marriage certificate reflects his parents names as W Campbell and M Havens. My Myrtle's 1908 marriage certificate (California) reflects her parents' names as Walter Campbell and Minnie Havens and states Myrtle was born in Michigan ca 1883. One further possible connection is Marvin's son born December 1907 is named Clive; Myrtle's first husband was named Clive and died accidentally in March 1907. I am looking for a connection between the two referenced families. Nellie and Orrin Blair were brother and sister; their parents were Orrin and Ruby Blair of Litchfield, Hillsdale, Michigan according to the census from 1870-1900. My gr-grandmother was Edith Jordan of Fayette, Hillsdale, Michigan. Her parents were John W. and Elcy Jordan. Elcy/Elsie apparently died in 1880 and John W. and his daughter Edith moved to Grayling where he managed the lumber mill. Cousin Nell came to visit Edith according to the Grayling Avalanche. Edith Jordan married Sidney Claggett and Sidney and Orrin Blair formed a company called Claggett and Blair. It appears that Elcy Jordan and Ruby Blair may have been sisiters - both report birthplace as Canada. Would appreciate any help in putting these two families together. I have just located the US Census for 1910 - 1930. My purpose is to try to find living cousins related to my 3rd great grandfather's brother who moved from Columbia County, New York to Hillsdale County and ultimately to Hillsdale City. It looks like the last two known generations were women in this historically long family. Amos King married Hopestill Haskins in 1781 at New Salem, Hampshire County (now Franklin County) Massachusetts. Amos died in 1839 at New Lebanon. Amos and Hopestill had 10 or more children all of whom have not been named or found. My 3rd great grandfather Nahum Amos King married Sarepta Norton (daughter of James Alexander and Dulianna Howe Norton) is the oldest born 25 July 1783. He brought his family to Oregon in 1845. His brother Luther might be one of the youngest of the brood. Luther remained in or near New Lebanon until his father died. He married in New York to Emmaline (nee ?) then moved to Wilson in Niagara County, New York and is listed with children John F. age 18 and Elizabeth age 16 in the 1850 census. The family headed by Luther is then listed in 1860 at Newfane, Niagra County, New York. John F. is living in the household married to Roxanna (born in Canada) they have 1 daughter Emmy age 1. Elizabeth is no longer in the household. A brief history that has been published showed that they were also in Indiana before coming to Hillsdale County where they are enumerated in the census of 1870. John F. King is the head of the house at that time with daughters Emmy age 11 and Hattie age 8 in 1870 Luther and Emmaline are living with them in retirement. The 1880 census for Hillsdale City, Hillsdale County 4th ward lists Luther is 73 and Emmaline is 71 as the head of the house. They are living on Brown Street. John F. is 49 and his wife Roxanne is 45. One daughter Hattie age 17 is living in the house at that time. (A Henry J. King family is living next door but I do not think that they are related or are not known at this time). As you know the 1890 census to not survive an act of Congress to destroy the census punch cards by fire. Their were no original tabulations taken by the enumerators. The 1900 census for Hillsdale County, Hillsdale City do not indicate that Luther or Emmaline are living. The household of John F. age 68 and Roxanna age 65 do not show any children living with them. The 1910 census for Hillsdale County, Hillsdale City again in the 4th ward shows the head of the house is Russell Peterson age 54 with wife Emma T. King age 51. Emma lists 2 children born with 1 living. Roxanna King a widow is living in the house. Roxanna lists 2 children born with 1 living since Emma is listed I assume that Hattie her sister has died. Hattie K. King age 22 is married to Carlton W. Woods. Carlton and Hattie K have been married for 1 year. The 1920 census for Hillsdale County, Hillsdale City taken in January 1920 lists Russell W. (age 64) and Emma (King) age 60 Peterson as the head of the house. Roxanna King (Widow) is 84. No children are listed. The 1930 census for Hillsdale County, Hillsdale City taken in April 1930 shows Russell W. age 74 and Emma (King) age 70 Peterson on Budlong Street in the 4th ward. They have been married since Emma was 19 years old. Can any one tell me of the family from recollections of the couple in the years 1910 to 1930 is the house still standing on Budlong Street? Do any of you listers know of Carlton W and Hattie K. (Peterson) Woods. After all that here is their lineage is case anyone is researching the family. We know that someone was or is researching the King line from Hillsdale in 1972. Children of Carlton W. and Hattie K. Woods (10); Hattie K. (Peterson) Woods (9), Emma T. (King) Peterson (8); John F. If you use the spreadsheet, "Census Tracker", please be aware that 1820 is not accurate. In the 1820 census, the 16-25 column was divided into 2 columns (16-18 and 19-25). Hello: New to this list and hoping someone out there might help me in learning more about my Cutler family in Hillsdale County. My g-g-g-grandmother was Caroline Matice Thompson Cutler. She was b. ca 1824 in Schoharie, NY and d. 1893 in Ransom, Hillsdale County, MI. Her last husband was Asa Cutler. She is buried someplace in Moscow Township. Anybody know anything about her and where she is interred? Her first husband was Prentiss Thompson (1820-aft. 1895). Their son Adelbert Thompson (1846-1919) was my g-g-grandfather. After Thompson abandoned the family ca 1859, Caroline married first an Avery and then Cutler. Caroline and Asa had at least one child--Walter Cutler, who moved to CA. He's mentioned as a half-brother in my g-g-grandfather's obit. Any help will be appreciated! I am trying to find documentation to support the marriages of my great-grandmother, Minerva E. PRIEST STEWART MURRAY, who spent most of her life in Hillsdale. She was born around 1848 in Licking County, Ohio, to Julianne TODD and Dyer Allen PRIEST, and lived in Defiance County, Ohio in 1860. From census records I know they moved to Hillsdale by 1870. By 1874 she had two children, Bertha and John STEWART ( my grandfather), and by 1880 she had a son named Edward MURRAY and was listed as a widow, staying with her sister and brother-in-law, Fannyretta and Hiram COREY, in Kansas. Bertha and John were not with her. Perhaps it was only a visit. She later lived in Hillsdale with Hiram who was a widower, then with her son Edward MURRAY, and ultimately with her niece, Estelle COREY CHESTNUT. I have her obituary that says she died July 8, 1939 and that a Reverend E. B. Hildner would officiate at the funeral, held at the home of her niece at 16 Charles Street. Does anyone have any information about any of these people? Does anyone know what church Rev. Hildner would have been associated with? Jan Melville Benders
