    1. [MIGRANDT-L] Counting Down 3..2.. Ellis Island
    2. COUNTDOWN TO ELLIS ISLAND OPENING ===================================================================== On 17 April, The American Family Immigration History Center will open on Ellis Island, to great fanfare. Genealogists all over will be logging in to search the newly created database of passenger arrival records of 17 million people who immigrated through the port of New York from 1892-1924. Ellis Island stands as one of the most prominent and recognized symbols of American immigration, with around 5,000 visitors a day walking through the same halls that many of our ancestors passed through so many years ago. To celebrate this historic opening, Ancestry.com will be featuring articles and Web pages to help you locate your immigrant ancestors. Look for articles to help you get the most from passenger arrival records, and take you beyond Ellis Island to follow up with other resources. For those who are unable to locate their ancestors in passenger arrival records, we will look at alternative sources. Stay tuned for all the latest information on the events planned. 2. Kim Pollard
    3. Hello fellow listers, I visited my local library and found that it has a large (for the town of 2,500 people) collection of Genealogical reference books that was donated some time ago. Now, I know some might be outdated, but if you would like to have me look for you just give me as much information as you can. Just a taste of what they have includes (this was all they would let me leave with today) Alabama Notes Vol. 1&2 by England ( indexed) Notable men of Alabama personal and genealogical Vol. 1 & 2 (Indexed) by DuBose Mississippi 1820 Census by Gillis ( indexed) Georgia 1850 Census Index by Jackson and Teeples (indexed) Cemetery and Bible records (in Mississippi )Vol. 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10. I don't have those with me, but I should have them by tomorrow. And many more. If you know anyone with this area of search please pass this along. I can't guarantee anything but I will try. One request at a time please. Our library is only open from 1-6pm Mon.- Sat. 2. Don't even bother trying to send for records from the state. I work in the mental health field and tried to get records for a doctor for a current patient for either the 1960s or 1970s and they had been destroyed. I don't know why they wouldn't keep these kinds of records longer. We used an official "release of records" with the patient's signature but there was nothing. Deb

    1. Re: [MIGRANDT-L] Northern Michigan Asylum burials?
    2. Dan, Unless a family member was here (or to call) to request funeral arrangements the deceased was buried at Oakwood Cemetery in the Asylum Plot. The number for Oakwood is 231-922-4907 and they are on computer and only takes a few minutes to look up. There are records at the sexton's office (not wholly complete) And there are records at the City Clerk,,,, 231-922-4480 which often has records that the sexton does not have so you should always check both places.. especially for the older libers. When they changed over to new libers there is not even a place for parents... arghhhh.. Cemetery is located on East 8th St with the sexton on the north side of the road. This is a big cemetery.. at least to us rural area folks..lol The Catholic burial records have all been moved to an office at 812 Garfield Road and are now held by the Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery, 231-947-7921 If he was not Catholic he will not be in their records. All the offices are very helpful. As for hospital records themselves.. they are in State Archives of Lansing.. same building as Library of Michigan. I have not tried to access any lately but they are hard to get too. Good Luck Brenda In a message dated 4/2/01 10:14:35 PM Eastern Daylight Time, dfetters@mindnet.org writes: << Is there a cemetery in or near Garfield Township for the Asylum patients that died at the hospital in the 1800s? I am forwarding this to every genealogy mailing list that I am on, and to the appropriate news media, and asking them to forward it to everyone they know, to ensure that people are informed on this intention: The plan is to dig up all the graves, consolidated the remains, and re-bury them in another location. If I understand correctly, no objections to this process have been made. I would like to go on record, as saying, I wholeheartly object. It is unthinkable that we would disturb our dead. It is sad enough to think that these people were without any worldly means, and had to depend on our society for a home and for a grave. It is incumbent on each of us, to remember these people with dignity in death, since they most likely were not afforded it in life. It is appalling to think that because they were poor, government can just step in and throw their remains away, as if they are insignificant. I CARE what happens to our cemeteries. They are our past, our heritage, our link to who we as Wisconsinites once were and still are. Even if you are NOT living in Milwaukee, please, think of the implications. My fear is that if this is done in Milwaukee, WI, perhaps a trend will be set in every county in the state, maybe the nation. While I have no family in this cemetery (that I am currently aware of), I do have ancestors I can't find in Milwaukee, and others buried in throughout WI in county "poor" lots, many who were women left destitute when their husbands died, many veterans who served our country, but had nothing upon old age. I ask you to reconsider, to rethink the message this desecration would send to our living who are poor and currently in homes due to financial hardships. Also, I just checked the State Historical Society site at:http://www.shsw.wisc.edu/arch/preserve/index.html It says: "Burial Sites: All human burial sites, including cemeteries and Indian mounds, are protected under state law Section 157.70 Wisconsin Statutes. http://www.legis.state.wi.us/rsb/stats.html The laws applies to both public and private lands. Owners of burial sites may receive property tax exemptions. The law is administered by the SHSW Burial Sites Program." So, I am adding Chip Brown chbrown@mail.shsw.wisc.edu who is their contact. I also think this is so important that Governor McCullum, should also be contacted. His email is: wisgov@gov.state.wi.us I give permission to replicate this in whole or part, and publish so that all people will be given a chance to speak out on this subject, and not push this issue to the back and allow it to happen as if no one cares. I am also asking that if you object that you email each of the individuals listed below as I have, letting them know of your objections. Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter. Respectfully submitted, Marcia Ann Kuehl formerly of Wisconsin Rapids, WoodCoWI, aka MAK Born and raised in WI, 30 year resident, Retired Marine, Concerned Citizen --------------------------- Subject: - Milwaukee Cemetery To Be Desecrated The following article is from Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright 2001 by Richard W. Eastman. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. - Milwaukee Cemetery To Be Desecrated This week I received an e-mail from Evelyn Oliveras that expressed concerns about the plans of the Milwaukee County (Wisconsin) Board of Supervisors. They reportedly plan to dig up all the graves at the Milwaukee County Poor Farm cemetery, place all the remains in one box and then bury those remains someplace else. The Milwaukee County Poor Farm began operation in November of 1852 with 24 people housed in a remodeled farmhouse. It remained in operation until the early twentieth century with additional buildings and a hospital constructed as the indigent population grew. You can find more information about the Poor Farm at "Jen's Photo Scrapbook Of the Milwaukee County Poorhouse" at: http://www.poorhousestory.com/WISC_PhotoScrapbook.htm Here is the message from Evelyn Oliveras: I need the help of each one of you who feels as strongly as I do about cemetery desecration. We have a county cemetery called Potter's field or sometimes referred to as Milwaukee County Poor Farm which is about to be desecrated by the county Board of Supervisors. They say they will dig up all the remains, place them in one box and move them to another location. These poor people were already buried on top of each other originally, and the whole thing is very sad to those of us who care. I am in the process of transcribing the burial registers to post on the web, but it is a long difficult process with different handwriting, etc. I have a full time job and family as well, but I devote what time I can to it. The County says that they've had no objections from the public and I say it is because no one really knows about it. I didn't even know about the open forum they had to discuss this and other issues until after it was over. They plan to make their move within a month, so I am beginning to panic. What I do need is for as many of you as will to email or snail mail them and let them know that the eyes of the rest of the world are on them. I have protested this type of behavior in all different countries as well as all over the U.S. and I know those emails counted. A friend in Finland has protested at every opportunity, and it's wonderful to let them know genealogy has united us all in an effort to preserve our heritage, our country and our ancestors. And these people are someone's ancestors. Milwaukee was an important Great Lakes Port and many people entered through here from all over. Many of the names are German, but when you have 7-10 thousand names, you've covered most every nationality. Please help us by letting the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors know how we collectively feel about this. I have faith that our group can move mountains. Please help us push. Mr. Tom Ament is the gentleman who appears to be in charge of this cemetery project and Karen Ordinans is the Director of the Board. You can see her Web page at: http://www.co.milwaukee.wi.us/ordinans.htm. I did a bit of checking on Evelyn's information. At the bottom of the Web page that she mentioned, you will find a link to send e- mail to the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors. The e-mail address is: county@www.co.milwaukee.wi.us If you share Evelyn Oliveras' concerns, please write to Karen Ordinans, Director of the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors at county@www.co.milwaukee.wi.us. 1. [MIGRANDT-L] CHAT: UNSUBBING yourself from any Rootsweb.com MAILING LISTS
    2. Hi everyone........ sending this to Rob when I thought.. I bet lots of people could use this information.. So if you get duplicates...... click DELETE.. .Mailing list cordinators everywhere will love you for it as most times.. a person who is a cordinator has more then one mailing list, myself is 16 at last count.. Now if you get a person from every mailing list that wants to unsubscribe or sub on the same day............ this can be time consuming as you can see. So volunteering to do this helps all mailing list volunteers. ::: smiling:::::: << I am still recieving email from the mailing list. I believe the address that needs to be removed is now: rparks@daed.com Can you help with this or should I be contacting someone else? >> Hi Rob, In the thought of saving Colleen some time, yes- she is the one who would have to unsub you other then yourself-- here is how~ For anyone to unsub from a mailing list from ANY rootsweb.com mailing list Take the email address for queries.......... ie Bower-L@rootsweb.com (change the name to the list you are on) add the word request.. like this Bower-L-request@rootsweb.com -- using that address in the Send To box of email.. and putting ONLY the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the text.. you have now unsubbed yourself.. the same as when you subscribe only the word changes to unsubscribe And IF YOU are on a DIGEST mode.. change the L to D... This is a easy way to remember how to unsubscribe from ANY ... ROOTSWEB.COM mailing list. This is included in every welcome you get from any list you join. Speaking of Welcome Lists.. a good way to save those for future references.. like unsubbing .. is to make a Folder called...... Welcomes or Mailing List or whatever you choose.. and when a welcome letter arrives? Use the Save As from the File menu.. name the file for the name, county, or whatever the subject of the mailing list is. Now, one more thing......... Say for example.. someone has forwarded you an email from a mailing list and you thing you would like to be on that list?? Look at the email address... Is it rootsweb.com? If so, add in the word Request that we talked of here in the beginning... and send that email with the word subscribe in the body of the email.. and you are now.. a subscriber to that mailing list....... without hunting for the URL that tells you how. Nifty, you say? I sure think so. In reality you only need to save one welcome regarding rootsweb's mailing list.. as all you need to do is change the name.. but by saving it you are also keeping a good record of WHO you are subscribed to also. Whoila........... don't ya just love it~ Good Luck Brenda Brenda K. The Army has some unidentified remains of service members from North Korea. Since DNA data was unknown in the 1950s there was no profile on these personnel. As B-Ann Moorhouse, CG, FGBS, suggested in an article in The NYG&B Newsletter (Moorhouse, 1992), "The Board of Health of the City of New York required that any body arriving in Manhattan via ship, train, or even local ferry be registered. Thus, the vacationer who died out West and whose body was being shipped back for burial in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, the New Jersey resident or Staten Island housewife whose body was being shipped across the river for burial in upstate New York, the Civil War soldier and sailor whose bodies were being shipped back to New England for burial, all were registered with the City." Moorhouse also notes that the registrations also applied to bodies being shipped in the opposite direction. An example given in this article is that of the transit of Abraham Lincoln, whose body passed through New York City on 24 April 1865. Biographical information included in the Lincoln record includes his age (52 years, 2 months), nativity (Kentucky), place of death (Washington, DC), date of death (15 April 1865), disease (pistol shot), place of interment (Springfield, Ill.), and name and address of person having charge of the body (P. Relyea). Bodies in Transit, the records for New York City covering the years 1859 to 1894, have been microfilmed and are available at the Municipal Archives of the City of New York, and through the Family History Library. Body transit records are also available for a number of other locations. Transit permits may also be interfiled with death records in the place where the burial took place.
