    3. Barry: You may remember that we communicated some time in the recent past about Theda CUMMINGS of Flint, MI. Are you aware of the Strong Family Association of America, SFAA; the two-volume History of the Strong Family, published by Dwight in 1871; and the update volumes that the SFAA compiled and published of Dwight's books during the 1990s? My late wife was Judith Alecia STRONG. Her roots go to NY State. My brother-in-law, Robert Sheldon STRONG, is the Historian for the Historian for the SFAA. At least I know that he is for descendants of Thomas STRONG, who was a s/o Elder John STRONG. Robert was in charge of compiling and publishing the volume of the updates for Thomas STRONG. I have cc'd Robert at: sffastrong@aol.com If you have some names, dates and locations, perhaps he can help you with any mysteries that you have. One of his cousins, Lyle STRONG, is also involved in the SFAA and he lives in Flint, MI. He name is Lyle STRONG, but I do not have his e-mail address. I know that Lyle has a few update volumes left that the SFAA would like to sell. If Robert cannot help you with your STRONG connection maybe Lyle can. 3. 5- N and 8-E is Groveland Township of Oakland County. 9-N and 7-E is Thetford Township of Genesee County. This is like the one you are looking for as Thetford touches all three of the townships you mention. I have an atlas of Michigan counties which makes these land references easy to find. Barb From: Lgk001@aol.com Date: Mon, Jul 22, 2002, 8:52pm To: MIGENESE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [MIGENESE] Genesee County Township locations Reply to: MIGENESE-L@rootsweb.com I'm trying to locate where some ancestors lived back in the mid 1800s. I found a Genesee County map which shows each township divided into its 36 sections. I also found two land patents for ancestors, but could not find out how to determine which township the land is in. The first land patent states: Township and range:   5-N and 8-E The second states: Township and range:   9-N and 7-E..... .....Most of my ancestors lived around Coldwater Road, on a west-to-east line around Mt. Morris, Genesee, and Richfield townships. Hopefully these numbers refer to one of those. Thanks for any help,

    1. [MIGENESE] Genesee County Township locations
    2. I'm trying to locate where some ancestors lived back in the mid 1800s. I found a Genesee County map which shows each township divided into its 36 sections. I also found two land patents for ancestors, but could not find out how to determine which township the land is in. The first land patent states: Township and range: 5-N and 8-E The second states: Township and range: 9-N and 7-E The only explanation I could find doesn't quite explain it for me. It reads: "A Township is identified by its relationship to a base line and a principal meridian. For example, "Township 5 South, Range 12 West, 5th Principal Meridian" identifies a particular township that is 5 tiers south from the base line of the 5th Principal Meridian." So...before I get carried away trying to find the base line and principal meridian, could anyone tell me what township these two land patents refer to? Most of my ancestors lived around Coldwater Road, on a west-to-east line around Mt. Morris, Genesee, and Richfield townships. Hopefully these numbers refer to one of those. Thanks for any help, Laura in Virginia

    1. [MIGENESE] Re: Jeremiah and Hulda
    2. Eileen, WELLLLL in fact there are some names I am kinda stuck on. I'll give you some info. ******* indicates information I am needing to know. :) 1>> For instance I have the 1880 Census in Michigan on my g g g grandparents Lydia AUSTIN and Peter JONES family. Lydia married a man named CHAPLE after JONES died. I found her on the 1900 Census as Liddie CHAPLE living with her son and family. I have not been able to locate any information on this marriage to CHAPLE to find out his first name. It is written on this Census as widowed. On the back of a picture of her and says after CHAPLE died Lydia married a William BROWN. I have not found that either. ****** So I would like to know more about both these marriages and CHAPLE's first name. 2>> They had a daughter who ended up being my g g grandmother. On this same picture she is known as Hattie BROWN - maiden name JONES. Pictures are marked Hattie BROWN or grandma BROWN. On this 1880 Census in Michigan I have of Lydia and Peter JONES, it list her as Adda JONES. She married someone name Charley HEATH first then William Murry BROWN according to the writing on the picture. On the 1900 Census in Michigan the same sheet her mother is listed as Liddie CHAPLE as I mentioned above, Hattie (alas Adda) is listed being married to William Murry BROWN but her name is listed as Olive A. The birth years for her from both these Census are a match, 1865. Then someone emailed me her marriage to William Murry BROWN and her name is Olive Adalade JONES who married on 17 May 1885. On the picture it says she married a Charley HEATH first but he drowned. Then I get an email from the people that maintain the Michigan Marriage database and it has Olive Adalade JONES married John F. HEATH in Tuscola County Michigan on 9 Oct 1881. ***** I would like to find out how Heath drowned and his death date, which has to be between 1881 & 1885. 3.>> Last is from Olive Adalade BROWN marriage is my g grandmother, Daisy Mae BROWN. She married a James S. McCOLLUM / McCALLUM. He was know as "Gentleman Jim" and also "Silks" His mother was Scottish and lived for a time in Orange County in Northern Ireland. I was told her maiden name was Sharp or Sharpe. James died in the flu epidemic. He had a brother name John and a sister named Mary. James McCOLLUM / McCALLUM was born 11 Jan 1865 in Prescott? Michigan and died 31 Dec 1918 in Michigan. After James died Daisy married a Nathan Oliver SMITH. He adopted all of the McCOLLUM / McCALLUM children and changed their last name to SMITH. After a unwanted divorce she married a Grant MCGlaughlin. ******* I am seeking for information on James S. McCOLLUM / McCALLUM parents and what his background is. ******Also how to prove that Nathan SMITH did adopt the children and changed the last names. My grandmother says he just adopted her, but my uncle says he did all the children. I would like to clear that up but don't know how to go about with this kind of adoption. So there you have it. I know it's a lot of information but hope you don't mind me posting to other list. I am hoping that someone will have any other kind of information that I don't have. I am really interested in finding more out about James, John and Mary McCOLLUM / McCALLUM parents in Scotland and the adoption I mentioned above. Thanks in advance and God Bless Pam

But the information I have is starting with my grandmother who was born in Prescott Michigan. So was James S. McCALLUM/McCOLLUM and his brother John. I believe they had a sister Mary McCOLLUM. That's all I know. So all leads are valuable to me. I am willing to share what I have. God Bless Pam

    3. Hi Judy, Wow that is amazing that you go to Fredericksburgh regularly! I am so curious about the area! And about Flint, as well. There actually are a couple of property documents I would love to see from Va. Give me a bit to get it together and I'll get back to you through you're e-mail, rather than the list serve. THANK YOU!!!!!!!
