Can anyone tell me if there is a place named "Little Prairie Round" in Michigan???? I just found it mentioned in some information I have on the Sackett family. Thank you. Kathy
From the book "MICHIGAN PLACE NAMES: The History of the Founding and the Naming of More Than Five Thousand Past and Present Michigan Communities" by Walter Romig, LHD, Wayne State University Press, Detroit 1986 : PRAIRIE RONDE, Cass County: Richard J. Huyck became the first postmaster of the rural post office of Little Prairie Ronde on November 1, 1837; the Westfield post office was changed to Prairie Ronde on January 31, 1846, and operated until June 17, 1862; the Little Prairie Ronde post office was changed to Prairie Ronde on August 6, 1901, and operated until December 14, 1913 [PO Archives]/ PRAIRIE RONDE, Kalamazoo County. See Schoolcraft. PRAIRIE RONDE VILLAGE, Cass County; this tract of six square miles was reserved by the Pottawattomi Indians in the Treaty of Chicago, 1821, but their claim to the land was exhausted in 1836 [Fox]. SCHOOLCRAFT, Kalamazoo County: the village was founded and platted by Lucius Lyon, a surveyor; he recorded the plat in 1831 and named it for his friend Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, Michigan's Indian agent; it was given a post office as Prairie Ronde on June 28, 1830 with George Brown as its first postmaster, being renamed Schoolcraft on June 8, 1832; incorporated as a village in 1866 [Charles F. Crawford,PM, Mich Hist 31:30 1947] Hope this helps.
