Hi, List! I discovered that when I can't read a gravestone, on my research trips, it is wonderful to have along a few pieces of plain old styrofoam, to sort of scrub the stone with, to dislodge some of the lichens and moldy stuff first, then I use a fat piece of sidewalk chalk, sideways, to gently rub over the letters, and then when I am done, I think it is best to have a squirt bottle of plain water along, just to rinse it off in case there is something in the chalk that could react with the stone. I think white is the safest chalk to use, as colors might possibly do something to the stones that are already old and feeble. I sure did appreciate the other tricks posted, and I have, in desperation, spit on my finger, and tried to wet the stone, when I had nothing else to help me. Also try a sheet of paper, and do a pencil rubbing, if possible. Thanks to all of you! Cheryl
