    3. My cousin and I are searching the names Anastasia, Boccia, Grossi and Marconi. She has searched the 1920 & 1930 census for Detroit, Michigan on Ancestory.com and could find nothing. How can that be? Doesn't everyone have to be on the cesus even if they don't own a home. I'm aware some people can be missed, but 4 whole families? Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks Billie. 3. My guess is that they weren't missed, but I'll give you odds that the surnames you are using got "butchered". My guess is that you won't find those surnames spelled anything like you expect them to be. Use the 1930 on ancestry and be creative with your options or tell it to SOUNDEX it. I can give you an example in my own research. My Husbands KRUGMAN family was in Lorain County Ohio in 1920. I knew they were there, they didn't move, they certainly didn't go back to Germany. I tried line by lines everything. I finally looked in my notes and found their address from a city directory. After much work I found them: KAUFMAN - the entire family was there, listed perfectly but the census taker may have been of a different nationality, and with John Krugman being a German I can imagine the conversation. My guess is the census taker wrote what he thought he heard. KRUGMAN ----> KAUFMAN Hope this is somewhat helpful!
