    1. [MIGEN-L] Tombstone trick
    2. Susan Newell
    3. Try this too the next time a tombstone is hard to read. Use a piece of aluminum foil or a mirror on the ground below the headstone. It will shine on the stone and help bring out the dates on it. Also, does anyone know where there is more Michigan information on-line that is searchable? I found people around the Detroit area I am trying to track down and on pension some record are just too expensive. Need to know about Indiana info too. Susan in Florida

    1. [MIGEN-L] tricks to read ancestor gravestones better
    2. dannan
    3. Hi, List! I discovered that when I can't read a gravestone, on my research trips, it is wonderful to have along a few pieces of plain old styrofoam, to sort of scrub the stone with, to dislodge some of the lichens and moldy stuff first, then I use a fat piece of sidewalk chalk, sideways, to gently rub over the letters, and then when I am done, I think it is best to have a squirt bottle of plain water along, just to rinse it off in case there is something in the chalk that could react with the stone. I think white is the safest chalk to use, as colors might possibly do something to the stones that are already old and feeble. I sure did appreciate the other tricks posted, and I have, in desperation, spit on my finger, and tried to wet the stone, when I had nothing else to help me. Also try a sheet of paper, and do a pencil rubbing, if possible. Thanks to all of you! Cheryl

    1. [MIGEN-L] Bringing out the names on headstones
    2. Hi, I'm not sure if someone else has suggested this to the list buta good friend of mine told me that while she was doing research on her family she ran into several headstones where the names and info were not easily readable. She and her husband took ordinary chalk and rubbed it over the headstone and it brought the info to the surface. I just went today and tried this on some of the stones that I hadn't been able to read before and low and behold they stood out very well...in fact... I took pictures of the headstones and the info is readable in them now too :-) And the best parts?? The chalk will wash away in the first rain and u don't have to press down on the headstone and worry about causing damage to them :-) Thought I'd pass this tidbit on and hope it helps someone else as much as it has me :-) Thanks Stephanie

    1. [MIGEN-L] Benjamin Fletcher
    2. Hello List Members: I am inquiring about a Benjamin Fletcher who has a daughter on my husband's family tree. Actually, she was his great-great-grandmother. According to the information that I have Laura's father was a native of Michigan but may have gone to Ohio before 1832. I would like to know the year of his birth and who his were. He would probably been born around 1812, assuming that he was around 20 years of age when his 1st son was born. Any help you might give would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Sharon California
