    1. [MIDLOTHIAN] SHILLINGLAW in Dalkeith
    2. Ronald Smith
    3. Hello all, this is my first contact with the Midlothian list. In 1768 William SHILLINGLAW and Ann SCOUGALL were married at Channelkirk. During the next twenty years they had four children baptised at Dalkeith, including Philip SHILLINGLAW (1777 ) who is my ancestor. Nothing is known of Philip until 30 years later when in 1807, he married Sarah PRINCE at St Martin in the Fields, London. Thereafter, he worked as a gardener at Bray, Berkshire; Camden Place Chislehurst, Kent; then Dupplin Castle, Aberdalgie, Perthshire (gardener to the Earl of Kinnoul ). In 1841, Philip, then aged 64, emigrated to Victoria, Australia, with son William, and daughters, Caroline, Elizabeth and Martha. It is presumed that his wife Sarah had died before 1841, but no record has been found. What was he doing for the first thirty years of his life? I fancy he was probably working as a gardener in Dalkeith area, possibly the Dalkeith Palace Gardens (given his subsequent carreer). Can anyone help me fill in this blank period please. I have been told that when Philip's brother William died at Pathhead in the 1860s the death-entry described their father, William, as a 'soldier.' ( that's the William mentioned in the first line of this posting.) Does anyone have any information on that? I do know that there were other SHILLINGLAWs in Dalkeith during the period of interest, but I don't know if they were related. Regards, Ronald Smith at Romford, Essex, U.K.

    3. Hi: If anyone comes across a connection to a Thomas SHILLINLAW and Margaret SWANSTON, daughter Christian SHILLINLAW(bd08May1806) and her husband Murdoch MacKay (married July 17, 1829) and then their daughter Margaret (30Jun1830) who married George Mill and then their daughter, George Jane, (bd09May1867(aka Georgina)) who married Lauchlan John Dempster (bd31 Jul1863) on 05 Dec 1884 please contact me. I have lots of Dempster info, and some Mill(s) family as well...and some McKay info. Have only just started sourcing the Shillinglaw part of the family but am always interested in the possiblity of a connection. 3. Hello Ronald Scotlands People lists the deaths/burials of 5 William Shillinglaws in Midlothian between 1802 and 1847. One of those was in Dalkeith in 1809. Have you looked at those to see if your Philip's father is one of them? Having said that I don't know how much information will be in these pre-1855 records Rhoda ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ronald Smith" <ronald.smith99@virgin.net> To: <MIDLOTHIAN@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, December 13, 2009 4:44 PM Subject: [MIDLOTHIAN] SHILLINGLAW in Dalkeith > Hello all, > > this is my first contact with the Midlothian list.
