    1. 1871 census Midlothian

    3. Hello, I am desperately seeking assistance from anyone who may have access to 1871 census indexes from Aberdeen, Edinburgh, or Glasgow. My great great grandmother, Elizabeth McGregor, had an illegitimate daughter, Isabella, born 7 July 1870 in Aberdeen. Isabella's father, Joseph Hardie, may have emigrated to the U.S. shortly after her birth. The next record I have of Elizabeth and Isabella is a ship's passenger list indicating that they sailed from Glasgow and landed in New York 25 Jan 1873. Elizabeth was married to Joseph Hardie 10 days later in Illinois. My family believe that Elizabeth was born in 1850 to a wealthy family in Edinburgh, but was disowned for becoming involved with a poor boy and/or having an illegitimate child by him. At this time I have no solid leads to Elizabeth's family, or Joseph Hardie's either, Joseph was reportedly born 1846 in Glasgow, but the birth record of their youngest daughter indicates that Elizabeth and Joseph were both born in Morayshire! So, I would love to find Isabella and Elizabeth, and Joseph too, if he was still in Scotland, in the 1871 census, in hopes of finding more clues to their families. But without access to indexes, finding them seems quite hopeless, Isabella and Elizabeth may have been alone and enumerated as McGregors, or maybe they could have been enumerated as Hardies, with or without Joseph. If Elizabeth's family were in Edinburgh, it is possibly she may have returned to them with her baby, but this seems rather unlikely. Elizabeth and Isabella may have been anywhere in Scotland in 1871, but Aberdeen and Glasgow seem the most likely places. So, I am begging anyone who may have access to 1871 census indexes, if you have a few minutes to spare, to check for any of the above three people, your assistance will be VERY greatly appreciated.
