sorry to beg for help again but...... I'm really stuck (and i mean surprisingly early on in the scheme of things) and i hope someone can help me. I'm looking for a david symons born in falkirk, stirlingshire in around 1839 ish. I need to find out the names of his parents but i cant read them from the images of both his marriage certs at scotlandspeople. One is so faded and the other i just cant read. I cant find his birth cert or any record of of his birth. He married elizabeth morrison in 1858 (she died in 1861) and elizabeth potter in 1963. can anyone shed any light on this for me? shurely it cant just end there can it? i know people get stuck all the time but everything i do just hits a brick wall. Thanks in advance, and thanks to everyone who has answered a previous question of mine, your help has been invaluable x _________________________________________________________________ Want to block unwanted pop-ups? Heather: A possible solution to your problem is to arrange for someone at Scotlandspeople to examine the certificates by hand and with a microscope, it is possible to have the writing enhanced enough to read. I have done this, so I know its possible. Heather I am going to the GRO on the 7th. December. If I cannot read it, I can ask the staff if there is a way of identifying the parents names. Hi Heather.... I see that someone has already given you some info re the 1863 certificate, but from now on you need all spellings of Symons, Simans. Simons, Simmons Simmonds, but if not do. Look also at the letter L.....often read instead of S.... So Lymons, etc. Lots of mistakes were made in the indexing. The 1841 census for should help you ... You should find David as a child. Get the film from the LDS library, and go through each frame. It will show parents, and also whether they were born in the county. Try finding him in the 1851 census too..... Heather, As your image is likely digitized this may not work. It does work however on badly faded documents and I pass it on in the hopes that it may resolve your problem. It is a solution passed on to me by someone who works for Archives Canada. Some may decry exposing an old document to the extreme light of a scanner but the alternative is a document that is unusable because of fading anyway. Scan the document in as high a resolution as possible. Save the scanned image and then open it in a photo program. I use Photo Impression because it came with my scanner but there are many others. Now in the photo program manipulate the contrast and brightness until you get an image that comes closest to being legible. Having said all that, it is possible that enlarging the image may make it more legible as well and you may wish to combine the digitizing and the scanning.
