Hello Listers, I am new to the List and am seeking help in finding the Parents and birthplace in Scotland of my Great Great Grandfather John CAMPBELL. I have so far hit a gigantic "BRICK WALL". John married and had a family in Elgin, Morayshire but I can't find any trace of his birth anywhere in Morayshire so I am now searching in other counties. My Great, Great Grandparents were JOHN CAMPBELL and ANN MATTHEWS. We have found that John had a brother ALEXANDER CAMPBELL who married ANN WINK. The information I have so far on the CAMPBELL & WINK families is; JOHN CAMPBELL b. about 1819 - but parents and place of birth unknown. Died 07 April 1847 at Elgin. John married ANN MATTHEWS (daughter of JAMES MATTHEWS & JEAN SIMPSON) in Elgin on 25 May 1839. Ann was bapt. 18 Oct. 1814 at Elgin and died at 119 Dundee St., Edinburgh, aged 79 yrs. JOHN CAMPBELL - died 07 April 1847, aged 28 years, House Carpenter in Elgin, and was interred in the Cathedral Churchyard, Elgin, on 9th April 1847. Children of John & Ann were: 1. JAMES CAMPBELL b. 07 March 1840 Elgin. Died 10 Feb. 1904, Edinburgh. James married ANN McPHERSON 16 Jan 1866, Carse of Ardersier, County of Inverness. (James became a house builder & joiner in Edinburgh and had his own business) 2. JOHN CAMPBELL b. 15 May 1841, Elgin. died 04 May 1870, New Elgin. Married but wife unknown. John was a Lance Corporal in the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders Regiment and served at Sialkot district in India 1860's. We have an old photo of John and his wife and 3 small children ( taken in the 1860's) but we have no info on his wife or childrens names. 3. ANN CAMPBELL b. 15 Jan 1843, Nairn, Nairn. Unmarried. Was a shopkeeper with her mother @ 119 Dundee St, Edinburgh. 4. ROBERT ALEXANDER CAMPBELL b. 01 Sept. 1844, Forres, Moray. Married BARBARA SMART on 03 Jan 1868, Leslie, Fife, Scotland. Known as "Alexander" he became a tailor and owned his own business in Edinburgh. 5. WILLIAM FERGUSON CAMPBELL b. about 1847/1848 in Elgin. His birth was never registered but it is believed he was born very close to the time of his father's death on 07 April 1848 at Elgin. William married ROBINA SNADDON/SNEDDON in Adelaide, South Australia on 25 May 1868. ALEXANDER CAMPBELL married ANN WINK about 1836/37 but have not been able to find the date or place of their marriage. Ann was the daughter of John WINK & Janet DOWNIE. Alexander & Ann had 2 children, John Campbell CAMPBELL born 12 Nov. 1838 and Alexander CAMPBELL born 25 Sept. 1840. Alexander's son John CAMPBELL married Margaret Jane TOUGH in Forres on the 7th July 1869. John & Margaret emigrated to Queensland, Australia shortly after their marriage and their first child was born on Queensland in April 1870. John's occupation was a Flour Miller. Margaret was the daughter of James TOUGH & Elizabeth MENZIES. Second son Alexander CAMPBELL married Ann ALLAN . No date or place for their marriage yet found, nor for the births of their children. Alexander was a school teacher and the family was found in the 1881 Census living at the Industrial School House in Kelso. He died at Kelso School house on the 4th June 1885 aged 44 yrs, leaving a wife and 6 children between the ages of 1 and 10 years. If you are able to help in any way in finding the parents & birth place of my GG Grandfather John CAMPBELL and his brother Alexander, or can put me in touch with other researchers who may also be a descendant of any of the above families, I would be very grateful.
