Hi Tracy. The following site gives you a good breakdown of the naming pattern. My families have pretty much followed this. I have also found that if the first son is named for the father's father, then they all pretty much have the same name. (i.e. my grandfather is, Lauchlan John, his father is Lauchlan John, his father is Lauchlan John, his father is Lauchlan John and then......his father is - John! That is as far back as I have found them and haven't found out why that happened. My grandfather broke the pattern when their first son was born. He was named after an uncle. Then the Lauchlan showed up as a middle name for their 4th son. The rest of their 6 boys were named after uncles of my grandmother and grandfather, with some having family names as a middle name. . Our women seem to follow the naming patterns as well, the prominent name being Cecilia. So...visit the site, it may help you out. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~scottish/ScottishNamingPatterns.html Regards Liz Dempster Ontario Canada Paternal Grandfather Side: Dempster, Gordon, Lindsay, Mills, McKay, Syme, King, Kemp, Dickie, Dickson, Forrest, Laing, Moncur, Reid, Ritchie, Buchanan, Simpson, Shillinglaw, Wier, White Tweedie Paternal Grandmother, Fraser, Swan, Allan, Peddie ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tracy McCallum" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, November 24, 2007 6:59 PM Subject: Re: [MIDLOTHIAN] naming pattern > Hi Listers, > I understand that in the Scottish naming pattern, the eldest son is named > after his paternal grandfather, the eldest d. after her maternal > grandmother, the second son after his maternal grandfather, and the second > daughter after her paternal grandmother.
