Jan, SPOTTISWOODE is a large house about 4 miles E of Lauder, OS sheet 74 "Kelso". I assume that the area all round was a large estate at one time - maybe even still. Interestingly, 1 mile W is a hamlet called Cambridge, where my wife's GrGrGrandfather was the Blacksmilth in 1851 and 1861 censuses. We visited there a few years ago and found the original smithy. The local joke apparently was, when asked where they were educated, the reply was "Cambridge" !! If you would like, I could scan the Victorian 1" map for you.
