    3. For those who can't get to Scotland, although the National archives won't do research for you, they will respond to specific queries, so you can order records if you find something of interest on their catalogue. However, you may get more than you bargained for - the bankruptcy file on my gtgrandfather turned out to be 165 pages in a bound volume, they had to film it and print from the film at as I recall a pound a page! A rather pricey exercise, and one I couldn't afford now. Of course if you are able to get there in person then presumably you can just select the pages of interest as the file turned out to be rather repetitious in places - frequent lists of creditors much the same as earlier lists - but the information I got from the file was invaluable in filling out the background to the story of his emigration My dream would be to spend a year in Scotland, I'm sure I could fill the time up very quickly searching all the records in depth Catherine On 6/02/2008, at 9:00 PM, [email protected] wrote: > > Many thanks, Catherine > Will try that, and I am going to Scotland in November, so hopefully > I might > see whatever original record there is to find then. > Doing my 'homework' now, so at least I know where to go!!!!! > Thank you for your help > Margaret > > On 5/2/08 5:15 PM, "Catherine Fitchett" <[email protected]> > wrote: > >> I found the bankruptcy records of my greatgrandfather (though >> fortunately he was not imprisoned) by searching in the online public >> access catalogue of the national Archives of Scotland. >> Not all their collections are indexed, but you may find something >> there. >> >> http://212.140.253.244/NAS/DServe.exe?dsqApp=Site20&dsqCmd=Index.tcl >> >> Or if that link doesn't work go to the main page at www.nas.gov.uk >>
