Hello Margaret One of my ancestors was imprisoned for debt at the Old Tolbooth Prison in the 1770s - he was described as a "Gentleman" prisoner. I found a record of his imprisonment at - West Register House, Charlotte Square, Edinburgh - telephone - 0131 535 1314. The Precognition outlined his statement, detailing how he found himself in such circumstances, it also included was a list of creditors, their business, and money owed to them. It made fascinating reading, and gave an insight into the justice system during that period. Hope this helps, Patricia.
