I do not want to waste > money joining Origins if they do not have data that Scotlands people have? > (Very expensive from South Africa due to exchange rate!) Good evening Mark, Don't mean to be negative but there are many gaps in the OPR's ( pre 1855 registrations) The Old Parish Registers (OPR's) comprise the records of births & baptisms, banns & marriages and deaths & burials kept by individual parishes of the Established Church (Church of Scotland) before the introduction of civil registration in 1855. The parish minister or the session clerk usually assumed responsibility for maintaining the registers, but since there was no standard format employed, record keeping varied enormously from parish to parish and also from year to year. Registration in Church of Scotland's registers was costly and unpopular, so many people did not bother to register events at all. One has to take this into consideration along with religeon of the person sought. I.E. A few RC Birth's and Marriages turn up . I often refer to the "Kirk Session Minutes " for the Church of Scotland & Secession Churches , There are also some records of other denominations, such as the Congregational, Methodist, Unitarian churches, as well as records of Quakers. The Kirk Session Minutes contain records of fornication, poor rolls, mortcloth accounts (good for finding deaths) and some baptisms and marriages not entered in the Old Parish Registers Unfortunately ,while most are now digitised at NAS , they are not (yet) available on SP .. Regards John John D. Stevenson Edinburgh Scotland.
