B.Manson has posted various queries of late, about GARRET and MANSON families, and their connections to the Relief Church in South Leith. As I suspect that Mr Manson may live in Canada, this information may not be terribly helpful, but I'll make mention of it all the same. While I was researching some of my ancestors from Leith (ROSS, MacDONALD, STRATTON, POWRIE and so on), I found that there were some useful resources housed in the National Archives at General Register House. Under ref. CH3/728 there are a number of original volumes relating to the United Presbyterian Church - Junction Road, Leith. This is an alternative name for the Relief Church see http://sttjrd.www5.50megs.com/ which shows a picture of the Church. Although today it is called St Thomas, and is C of S, the Presbyterian (and earlier) history of the Church can be accesses via a link entitled 'historical outline of our Church'. Returning to the N.A.S. catalogue, I would suggest that you consider studying the following selection : CH3/728/39 Communicant's Roll - which shows various details of the congregation, such as their current address, occupation, and even marital status. CH3/728/32, 33, 34 & 36 Baptism & Marriage registers between 1825 - 1879 (Marriages only 1837 - 1855). I have never found a burial register relating to this Church, but some of my ancestors, who were members of the Relief Church, have proved to have been buried at Rosebank Cemetery (registers with Mortonhall Crematorium) and South Leith Kirkyard (registers up to about 1843 with the N.A.S. - later ones at Mortonhall).
