Hello folks, My grandfather was illegitimate and orphaned at 2 years (1871). He was raised by his aunt and uncle in Edinburgh. His mother's father, uncles and aunts lived in a mining village east of Edinburgh. After finding his father named in the Kirk Session Records, I know grandad's birth father lived in the coalmining village too. My question to the list is: What was the social attitude in 1870s in Scotland towards birth fathers and their family? Were they accepted, rejected or did it depend on each individual case? I'd be most grateful for any ideas, suggestions or advice on where to find this sort of information. (I live in Australia.) Thanks Jean
