Thanks, Catherine! Appreciate the info. At L55 ++ I'll have to wait awhile! It's a pity the index isn't available on line - they could put it on a CD and sell many copies at a reasonable price. FreeCen has the 1841, a blessing - that's how I found my family. Have a lovely weekend! Azalea season here, the heat of summer has not yet begun. Is this a name index? If so, can >anyone point me to it, or would SKS look up the Stephensons and Pococks for me? We had a copy of Vol 1 & 2 at our local Family History Centre, but unfortunately there is a big reorganisation / downscaling going on, and these two volumes have gone - I'm not sure where. I have just done a big hunt on the web and located Vol 1 & 2 (the Old Town and the Canongate) in the Scottish Genealogy Society Library, but not Vol 3 (the New Town). They have Vol 3, parts 1 &2 for sale but not Vol 1 and 2. It is a very extensive index. Vol 3 is 671 pages in total. The purchase price is £55 even without postage which would be considerable since it's a heavy book. In New Zealand, I know that the National Library in Wellington holds copies - I think all three volumes - but I don't get there often The authors are N R & S Carstairs Catherine
