However as the two parents of the bairn are normally named [with mother maiden surname] you are thus enabled to search the parents' deaths and marriage, both of which normally yield the names of the barn's grandparents, icl. grannies' maiden surnames. My reply refers to SCT records dated from 1855. Cheers, ALISTAIR M. CAMERON A.A.G.R.A. Professional Genealogist http://quozl.netrek.org/cameron-research/ PO Box 215 BUNDANOON NSW 2578 AUSTRALIA

    3. The IGI lists a marriage for a John Atkin married to a Mary Ashton in Grappenhall, Cheshire. These possibly are my GGG grandparents. Their son John Atkin my GGgrandfather died in Glasgow. His death record said his mothers name was Mary Daniel. The fathers name was listed as John Atkin a Fustian Cutter. This is correct bases on the 1841 Salford and other census. Census records in Scotland record this families birth towns and ages correctly the same as listed when they were in Salford for other census years. The family I am researching in Salford provided a daughter and a son whose mothers maiden name was Ashton. At this time period they also had a son named John the same age as my GGgrandfather John. But this young Johns occupation was listed as a Fustian Cutter. My John was Gold Beater. I am inclined to think that that a Fustian Cutter would not change his trade to another trade. But on the other hand, I don't think producing gold leaf would require much skill either. This same family in the 1841 census had another son they named Richard Daniel Atkin. Now I wonder, was there a Daniel connection in this family. Mary Ashton had not been married before. In Cheshire some churches had baptismal records that listed both sets of Grandparents. It was my hope this might be the case in Scotland. Some of the records in Scotland do appear to be better than some I have come across in Manchester. So Lads and Lassies, that's my story :)) All my best Mike Morris Toronto Canada Ex Manchester ----- Original Message ----- From: "Alistair Cameron" <acameron@hinet.net.au> To: <MIDLOTHIAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, April 18, 2005 6:41 PM Subject: Re: [MLN] Birth records > > > Mike Morris wrote: > > > > Can some kind person tell me if birth records after 1871 give the > > grandparents names? > > Just about NEVER! > > However as the two parents of the bairn are normally named > [with mother maiden surname] you are thus enabled to search > the parents' deaths and marriage, both of which normally > yield the names of the barn's grandparents, icl. grannies' > maiden surnames. > > My reply refers to SCT records dated from 1855. > > Cheers, > > ALISTAIR M.
