    3. Dear Elizabeth, You'll probably find that Jane McKie McGowan was named for her mother or grandmother. There are several women in my Scots family who used this naming pattern - a daughter was given the mother's given and maiden name. Very helpful in tracing back! 3. Hi Elizabeth I have had that situation happen where for example my ggrandmother Mary Ann McKIE unmarried at the time had an illigitimate son and called him George GREEN McKIE suggesting the unknown father was called GREEN. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ray Pearse" <r.e.pearse@sympatico.ca> To: <MIDLOTHIAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, February 25, 2005 3:25 PM Subject: [MLN] McKIE > Hi Carolyn > Re my grandmother Jane McCREADIE (McGOWAN) I neglected to mention that > McKIE was her second name > Elizabeth in Canada > >

    3. Hello Ray Re the second name McKie - it was a common practice to include the surname of an ancestor as a second name in the 1800's. This can be immediate or some name they liked from their ancestors. My grandfather was James Wotton Hislop and I eventually discovered that the Wotton came from my Gt x 4 grandmother's line. Another Gt x 2 grandfather George Robson Kirkley had the Robson from his Gt Gt grandmother. It does offer a clue to former generations and can be very useful when trolling through the IGL site to give an indication of which church records to search. This practise continued well into the 20th Century - my grandmother used it for my father. Good hunting Evelyn
