Hi listers, Please tell me where I might look for information on a mine accident in West Calder 18 May, 1859. I've found the death registration for an ancestor on that date. Directly below that is another man who died at the same time, same place, same day. The writing (by the same person) is a little hard to read but appears to be "Killed by foul ....in a coal pit. There has just been a discussion on LANARK list about mine records and the status of the workers. Hopefully, this incident is a little later than that, and there are some records. Many thanks for any clues. Jeannette
Could it be foul air, i.e. gas? That's it, Sonia. I just found a handwriting guide in my genealogy class today. (After I had it figured out.) My dad worked in the mines around Hamilton, as a young boy, and often talked about the air and the canaries used to watch for the gas. That was 'way back before 1930.
