    3. Descendants of James Murdock Generation No. 1 1. James Murdock was born Abt. 1780 in Diocese of Tuam, Connaught Province, Ireland, and died Nov 1809 in Rodrigo, Spain. He married Mary Tully 1806 in Diocese of Tuam, Ireland. She was born Abt. 1785 in Diocese of Tuam, Connaught Province, Ireland. Notes for James Murdock: In 1803 James was a Sergeant in the 2nd Battalion of the 42nd Foot Regiment {The Black Watch}. Stationed at the Weeley Barracks in North Britain in the Camp. Robt. McAras Company. He was sent to Ireland in 1804 and again in 1806 then came back to North Britain until 1808 and in September of that year was sent to Dublin with the Capt. Archibald Menzies Company. In June 1809 he was sent to Rodrigo, Spain where he fought in the Peninsular War with the same company. The Peninsular Was called the War of Independence, that part of the Napoleonic Was fought in the Iberian Peninsula, in which British troops {from 1809 commanded by Arthur Wellesley, later Duke of Wellington} helped drive Napoleonic armies from Portugal, secured that country from attack, and later {1812-13} co-operated with Portuguese and Spanish forces in expelling the French from Spain, invading France itself in 1813-14. Unfortunately, James was killed in service in November of 1809. Christened in the Parish of Ardersier in the County of Inverness, Scotland on the 22nd April 1808 before he went to Dublin and thereafter Spain. We assume Mary, baby James and his sister Margaret stayed in Ireland instead of returning to Scotland following the death of their father as most of the records now show County Antrim or Derry as places of birth for the next generation. HM 42nd Foot, The Royal Highland Regiment {The Black Watch} was the first Highland infantry regiment and by far the most famous. Formed in 1716 to police the highlands after the 16, it soon became one of the premier regiments in the British Army. It is the only highland regiment which still exists undiluted. Memorial at Dunkeld Cathedral, Scotland "In memory of the Officers, Non-commissioned Officers, and Private Soldiers of the 42nd Royal Highlanders - The Black Watch - who fell in war from the creation of the Regiment to the close of the Indian Mutiny, 1859 The ten Independent Companies of the Preacadan Duch, or Black Watch, were formed into a Regiment on the 25th October 1739, and the first muster took place in May 1740, in a field between Taybridge and Aberfeldy. Here, 'mong the hills that nursed each hardy Gael, Our votive marble tells the soldier's tale; Art's magic power each perished friend recalls, And heroes haunt these old Cathedral walls. Erected by the Officers of the Corp. 1872". More About James Murdock and Mary Tully: Marriage: 1806, Diocese of Tuam, Ireland Children of James Murdock and Mary Tully are: 2 i.
