Hi Budd My great grandfather, David Ramage, was a brassfounder who went into his father Peter's business in Candlemaker Row. He has proved to be very elusive as I have yet to find details of his death. So far I have established that he died sometime between 1901 and 1904. The business seems to have been sold, or it moved out of Candlemaker Row in the mid 1890s. As far as I know the street was probably a mixture of commercial and residential properties at that time. If you look at the photos on the web site mentioned by Ann the second picture of Candlemaker Row is looking down it from George IV Bridge beside the statue of Greyfriars Bobby. The numbering of the properties has changed over the years and I couldn't find number 90 on a recent visit to Edinburgh. I think it was on the left hand side of the street as you look at the photo but down towards the bottom so it is out of shot. No 88 should be next to it. Hope this helps a little. Best wishes David
In the back of my mind I believe that a few years ago on this mailing list it was stated that there was a Register of Burials in Edinburgh. This Registerwas alleged to include the names and burial ground of each person who died in Edinburgh. I can't remember whether it was on-line or that a postal address was given at the time. Does anyone know about this register and how one accesses it in 2008 ? Budd
