    3. Hello Patricia.....from what I have found,my JOHN PETERKIN was born somewhere in Scotland in 1809.I have not located where he came from, but he did get married in Kirkwall Orkney on May 24 1836 to Jane Fairweather. They had 7 children...Elizabeth born August 1842 in Kirkwall, married William Swanson.....Isabella born January 1845 and married George Begg.....Jane born March 1841 and married Alexander fairweather[her mothers brothers son...cousins]Alexander born 1840 and married to Margaret MoorAlexander is listed as a master mariner in Englands 1881 cencus with his wife and children.......John born 1848 and married to Mary Brechin......Margaaret born 1836,no other information on her........possibly she is the Margaret Peterkin in New Zealand.and lastly,Catherine...my great grandmother born in Banff.....possibly the only pPeterkin child not born in Orkney, and married to James Johnston. I do have a new Zealand connection....a strong one,but I dont think it has any connection to your Margaret. My grandfather Peter Johnston,,,son of james and Catherine Peterkin, emmigrated to New Zealand along with 5 of his sisters, his wife and 3 children (my dad was 6)I am not sure how it all came about, but the girls went on to New Zealand and grandpa and his family stayed in Canada. The girls would all have been "Johnston/e's,and as they came from a family of 12 children they all had the middle name of Peterkin or Fairweather......all but one,the youngest whos middle name was Pirie.........So,Mary Pirie Johnstone went to New Zealand with her sisters, married there and I have recently located her death records from pirwa crematorium in Aukland. So,Marys mothers maiden name was Peterkin. It is an unusual name in Canada. It was also my dads middle name and was forever being shortened to Peter, which really irked him.Dads last couple of years were in a rest home...he lived to be 98...and his wrist band said James Peter Johnstone.Knowing that he did not have much time left,I went streight to the top dog on the totem pole and demanded for the umpteenth time that it be put right.....and it was. Long winded story, but if you are like me,when you find a wee bit of information, you want it ALL! Looking forward to hearing from you and seeing what information you have.I have visited New Zealand several times, still have loads of cousins there, and they took me around to see the different homes where grandads sisters had lived and raised their familys, mostly Onehunga area. Write soon...................we expect a bit of snow later tonight,so I must get out and grab some milk and bread from the shop........Diane ----- Original Message ----- From: Patsyd <Patsyd@paradise.net.nz> To: <MIDLOTHIAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, November 30, 2004 9:55 PM Subject: Re: [MLN] Peterkin > Hi Diane, > I am very interested in the fact you are tracing the PETERKIN family. > I have Margaret PETERKIN who married Franics UPHAM, a Labourer from England. > They came to NZ where Francis worked in the Coal mines. > This would have been after 1840 (when NZ started bringing labourers to NZ), > and there son Edwin (whose birth is not registered I can only guess at his > birth being c1880. > > I no nothing else which is of useless help as there are numerous Margaret > PETERKIN's, unless you have an UPHAM in your files? > > Patricia in New Zealand. > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Diane Pearen" <dpearen@shaw.ca> > To: <MIDLOTHIAN-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Wednesday, December 01, 2004 5:50 PM > Subject: [MLN] Peterkin > > > > I am still researching this PETERKIN family but now feel that they may > have been in the Leith area for the 1851/1861 or 1871 census. Is there anyone > who could please look them up on those census for me?PLEASE!!!!
