Hello! Could SKS who has access to the 1851 census of Edinburgh please tell me if the Stephenson family were living at Fleshmarket Close, and what information is given - in particular, the birthplaces in England of Hugh and Margaret. Without knowing where they came from I can't trace back. In the 1841 census, FreeCen shows my Stephensons - widower Hugh Eskew STEPHENSON and children - were at Fleshmarket Close. Hugh and his daughter Margaret were listed as born in England, and I know that his daughter Isabella (who married James POCOCK JR. at the Free Kirk in 1839, recorded St. Cuthberts) was born at Ancrum, and his son William, who married first, Helen ANDERSON and second, Barbara THOMSON, was born at Hawick. Hugh was the widower of Jemima WHILLANS, who died in 1834 at Smailholm. His son Hugh had moved out and was a tea dealer in Edinburgh in 1841. Known children of Hugh Eskew Stephenson and Jemima Williams were Margaret, Jane, Isabella, William, Hugh, Elizabeth, and James. Does anyone know who the other children married? I wonder if Hugh Stephenson was, like James Pocock Sr., a Cameron Highlander, pensioned out after the Peninsular Wars and Waterloo! Your help would be very much appreciated. All the best, and Happy New Year! Sonia Murray Biloxi, MS USA
