Could some one advise if there is an index for the 1851 and 1861 censuses for Edinburgh. Please oblige. Mery
Try freecen.rootsweb.com unfortunately very few of Edinburgh's parish's are finished only some of 1841/45 but keep this in mind and try every so often. Mery, There are name indexes for a few parishes in 1851. ie New Town, Greyfriars, Canongate and some others in bookform at. http://www.scotsgenealogy.com/ and at the Edinburgh Central library. As far as I'm aware the census years 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871 have all been indexed by street name only, so it is best to first find the address you need on a certificate or in a directory. 1881 is available on CD and 1881, 1891 and 1901 can be searched on http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ FreeCen is coming along but I don't know if any of Edinburgh is on-line yet. http://freecen.rootsweb.com/statistics.html If all else fails, there is still the old fashioned way - hire a likely film or 2 from the LDS and keep turing the reel. I have found many people this way and although it takes time, it can be rewarding! Hope this helps, Jane ----- Original Message ----- From: "mery" <mery67@tpg.com.au> To: <MIDLOTHIAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, December 01, 2004 10:32 AM Subject: [MLN] Census Indexes > Could some one advise if there is an index for the 1851 and 1861 censuses > for Edinburgh. > Please oblige. > > Mery > >
