Hello I wonder if any one can help me identify, and, or, date the uniform or any of the soldiers in a photo. This photo is from the BUCHAN family album taken prior to 1877. The soldiers are wearing dark "pill box" type hats, some with a light or white band at the base. The jackets have mandarin colours edged in braid with braid at the base of the neck too. Brass buttons are fastened down the centre of the jacket.. All are wearing light or white belts, some have a diagonal strap adjoining the belt. Each sleeve has a vertical figure 8 with a horizontal figure 8 linked through it's base . A loop through these 8s has tails extending to the cuff, in what appears to be white or gold braid. The whole motif appears to be about 6 inches deep and 4 inches wide. The men standing at the back of the group have a single V stripe on both arms and have swords in their left hands with the point resting on the ground.. Those sitting, lying down have plain sleeves and no swords.. There are! several large white tents in the background. The family lived in Liberton, Lasswade, Leith and Edinburgh. I know it's a long shot but I'm an optimist and ever hopeful that one of you most knowledgeable people will be able to at least give me some clues as to where to research for more information. Thanks, In anticipation Evelyn MacCallum
