In 1841 the family was still in Dingwall but in 1851 Isabella, her sons David, John and George and daughter Elizabeth were in Edinburgh where Isabella died 16 Feb 1862. I don't know where Ann was in 1851 but in 1861 she and her new husband, a British militia soldier by the name of Amos Goring (actually Amos Garard which is a story in itself) were living with her mother Isabella , brother George and sister Elizabeth at 7 Physic Gardens, Edinburgh. David and John (who were shoemakers) had disappeared. Alexander married Betsy Moffat in Auchterarder, Perthshire in 1846. They had large number of children. 1861 census at 3 or 5 Lochend Close, Canongate there were Janet 12, Isabella 10, Alexander 8, Johanna 6, Elizabeth 4, Margaret 2. The eldest four were born Perth, Johanna in Dundee and the last two in Edinburgh. More children on the IGI: Elizabeth 20 Sep 1855, James 30 May 1857, Margaret 6 Aug 1859, John 9 May 1861, Ann 3 May 1863, Cicilia 3 May 1863, Donald 10 Oct 1865, William 7 Apr 1868 I'd be a bit dubious about this being the Alexander I want eg no child named for his father, but there weren't many Sutherlands in Dingwall in 1841 and he was the only Alexander of anything like the right age. Of course he may have left before 1841. If anyone connects to any of these Sutherlands I would be interested to hear from them Catherine

Nearest were aged 27, and 9. I am not related. Cheers, ALISTAIR
