A "divine" is a fancy name for a minister or priest. This Petrie seems to be Arthur, rather than Alexander. He was of the Scottish Episcopal Church and was Bishop of Moray. He seems to have been Bishop of Argyll before that. His dates were 1730-1787. My line is Petrie, from Bathgate at least to very early 1800s - my grandfather, however, said he was related to Sir William Mathew Flinders Petrie (don't know how - all deceased). In a biography, British author Margaret Drower mentions that that Petrie line could connect to the "famous Scottish divine" Alexander Petrie (1700s). Anyone out there know anything about this Alexander Petrie and what a "divine" might be? Thanks! Kit (Petrie) Timmons
Hi Sheena - Thank you for this information..... there could be a connection to an Arthur as well. I'll share this with my "chance encounter" Petrie, and see if it fits his group, as well!
