I am wondering whether it is possible to locate death and/or burial records in Midlothian prior to the introduction of statutory registration. I would be interested in finding the deaths of my ancestors William Wylie/Wyllie and Beatrix Wylie/Wyllie nee Dudgeon (also referred to as Beattie). I do not know when they died. They were married in Edinburgh in 1786, had a son born in Portobello and baptised in Duddingston in 1787, and a daughter born in Prestonpans in 1808. I believe they died in the Midlothian/East Lothian area between 1808 and the 1841 census. Is there any way by which I may be able to locate their death or burial records? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards Adrian Burns _________________________________________________________________ SEEK Salary Centre: What are you really worth? Hi Adrian, the bad news is there are very few death/burial records in Scotland prior to 1855. The figure I recall is less than 1% of Scots who died in the first half of the 19th Cenutury have any record of thier death. If your ancestors rich and could afford it, a monumental inscription might have survived. The Scottish Genealogical Society has several booklets MI transcriptions for sale, there are also some transcriptions online, just google "monumental inscriptions , Scotland". The some Church of Scotland records do survive, this is very patchy, some parishing having nothing, some just a few blocks of years, most of these records are in the form of accounts, usually payments for Mort Cloth hire but I have accounts for, ringing of the bell, hurse hire and gavestones, the account book entries are often as one would expect in the name of the person paying the money rather than deceased, by sometimes you get lucky. The Church of Scotland records have all been filmed by the LDS, but are largely unindexed. At some point they will be all indexed on the Scotlands People site. This aside it is still worth looking but be prepared to find nothing or dance arround the room if you find one.
