    3. Pre 1855, check the family history societies for MI transcriptions. Also check the http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/MLN/index.html and other genuki extensions as you may luck out and find links through local kirks. And example, one I found in the East Lothian's identified one of my fourth great grandparents in a Kirk yard I had walked and missed, their crumbling stone. Beyond that, in my years living in the UK I walked, literally, more Kirk yards than I ever dreamed of looking for and transcribing family names. What has already been said is true, that a family had to have some money before they could or would spare the money for a memorial. BUT, each of the eight that I have found have not only provided additional information and documentation, but a very special opportunity to consider my family stood in the same spot on sad day up to 200 years ago... My earliest find is 1792, so they are out there.... Good luck John and I hope you can get up and walk some Kirk yards. The figure I recall is less than 1% of Scots who died in the first half of the 19th Cenutury have any record of thier death. If your ancestors rich and could afford it, a monumental inscription might have survived. The Scottish Genealogical Society has several booklets MI transcriptions for sale, there are also some transcriptions online, just google "monumental inscriptions , Scotland". The some Church of Scotland records do survive, this is very patchy, some parishing having nothing, some just a few blocks of years, most of these records are in the form of accounts, usually payments for Mort Cloth hire but I have accounts for, ringing of the bell, hurse hire and gavestones, the account book entries are often as one would expect in the name of the person paying the money rather than deceased, by sometimes you get lucky. The Church of Scotland records have all been filmed by the LDS, but are largely unindexed. At some point they will be all indexed on the Scotlands People site. This aside it is still worth looking but be prepared to find nothing or dance arround the room if you find one. 3. Kia Ora Hugh, GENUKI is a great recomendation, for all of us even thouse that have been there before, you never know what's been added... I dream of walking through Kirkyards & the streets of my ancestors. I am a solo dad, so living that dream will wait till my kids are grown. But thanks to the generiousity of many Scots ( & the odd Kiwi whose made the trip arround the world to visit the places of thier ancestors) I have photos of MI's of my own in Haddington, on a farm in Aberlady and Linlithgow. Even the inside of the home of my 4 great-parents. cheers John --- "Preacher, Hugh J." <[email protected]> wrote: > Pre 1855, check the family history societies for MI > transcriptions. > > Also check the > http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/MLN/index.html and > other genuki extensions as you may luck out and find > links through local > kirks. > > And example, one I found in the East Lothian's > identified one of my > fourth great grandparents in a Kirk yard I had > walked and missed, their > crumbling stone. > > Beyond that, in my years living in the UK I walked, > literally, more Kirk > yards than I ever dreamed of looking for and > transcribing family names. > > What has already been said is true, that a family > had to have some money > before they could or would spare the money for a > memorial.
