Jacquie - I had a look at the transport records on Ancestry, and they show two Duncan McArthur's transported from Glasgow: 1) Duncan McCarter/McArthur transported from Glasgow to Australia in 1826 for life, and 2) another Duncan McArthur transported to Australia in 1831 for seven years. Are those the records you are referring to? I do not find a third Duncan McCarter record for 1818. Both of these men would have been too late for my Duncan. He disappeared in 1817. Duncan's wife was expecting their last child, George McCarter who was born 27April 1817 at Ruchlaw Mains, Whittingehame. Someone paid for a mortcloth for his daughter, M[ary] McCarter 13 July 1817 in Whittingehame parish. His widow began collecting from the poor accounts in August 1817 and continued collecting until her death. There seem to have been more deaths listed in the summer of 1817 at Whittingehame, so I expect there was some type of sickness that went thru the village. I have assumed that Duncan died then, but it is always possible something else happened. If you could tell me where you found the reference to the third Duncan McCarter dated 1818, I would much appreciate it.
