    1. [MIDLOTHIAN] Parents of James Lindsay, paper maker
    2. Patty Lindsay
    3. I am looking for the parents of James Lindsay, paper maker, who married Janet Keith from Lasswade, had many children in Penicuik and then moved to Markinch, Fife in 1814 when is son David became owner of the Rothes Mill there. Here's what I have: James was buried in Markinch in 1839 at age 85, so he was born about 1754. Janet was buried in 1834, also in Markinch. Have not found a marriage record for James and Janet Keith. Following children registered in Penicuik to James Lindsay, paper maker, and Janet Keith: - Adam, b 12 June 1783, m Jean Hogarth, has 3 children in Penicuik and then 8 in Markinch, emigrates to Saugerties, NY about 1830 - Archibald b 5 Nov 1787, m Agnes Wyse of Markinch, marriage registered in Canongate, has 7 childrenn in Markinch, emigrates to Northern Ireland about 1830 - Margaret b 21 Oct 1791, m Peter Thomson, marriage registered in Canongate, has 3 children in Markinch - James b 28 June 1793, m Janet Mitchel, 3 children in Markinch, moves to Glasgow as a rag merchant - Mary b 4 Mar 1795, m James Ingles in Penicuik in 1830 - Thomas, b 10 Jul 1797 Known children with no registrations found: - Marion, buried in Penicuik 13 Oct 1796 - David, purchases Rothes Mill with Thomas Whyte of Leslie in 1814 after Keith bankruptcy (see below), Thomas goes bankrupt and then so does David in 1830 when family apparently scatters. David evidently worked in the mill before purchasing when it was owned by Archibald and William Keith who started the mill in 1804. William Keith dies in 1806 in Markinch and there is a court battle between Archibald Keith Sr and William's wife Marion and son Archibald. William is Janet's brother, Archibald is referred to as William's father in court papers, but I believe was actually his older, by 20 years, half brother who probably raised him. Archibald Sr had a paper mill at Newbattle. So did David Lindsay move to Fife 10 years ahead of the rest of the Lindsay family with his uncle William? Did the Lindsay's originally have roots in Fife? David marries a half sister of Thomas Whyte's wife in 1819. The father of Janet, William and Archibald is Adam Keith. Janet's mother is Marion Stevenson. The bankruptcy papers for David refer to a father James, brother Adam and sister Rose which is the basis for linking him to this family. David emigrates to NY with his sister Rose about the same time as his brother Adam and family, and dies in February of 1831 in Saugerties, New York. - Rose, only reference is in the court papers. Adam also names his last daughter Rosalind Thomson in 1830 before leaving for the US. I believe the name Rose came from Janet Keith's brother's wife Rose Thomson. James has a sister Jean who is buried at Markinch in 1815. Other possible connections: James' son Archibald and daughter Margaret are both registered in the Canongate parish with Adam Lindsay, coach maker, as a witness. An Adam, coach maker, married Jean Dundass, also in Canongate, in 1794. Does anyone have information on this Lindsay line? Or about Adam, the coach maker? Using the naming tradition, James' father might be named Adam and his mother Margaret, assuming Marion was born before Margaret. Unless the Adam and Archibald are named after Janet's father and older brother, in which case possibly David is the older brother. But then there isn't a Janet even though there are multiple daughters, so either there is yet another child missing or James and Janet did not adhere to the naming tradition completely. Any thoughts on predicting James' parents' names? Any thoughts on where James originated? Or where and when the births of David and Rose might be registered? Patty
