Hello List I am seeking a Kinnaird family who in the 1870 time period were living at 17 Canning Place, Edinburgh . The Father David Hay Kinnaird was not present as he was shown on the 1881 census as a Royal Marine lodging in Devonport, Devon. The wife was living in Edinburgh with the two children ,The wife was Jane ? Kinnaird and the two boy's were Walter and Thomas, I have searched Ancestry census records without finding a trace of this family. My hope is that another Kinnaird researcher might have found them while searching. I have I think Kinnaird descendants of Thomas Kinnaird and Janet Redpath. Bob
Hello Bob It would help if you could give dates and places of birth for all members of the family. Hello again Bob I have been unable to find a Walter KINNAIRD of any age living in Edinburgh in the 1871 Ancestry-transcribed census. However I think I found the family in the 1871 Census on Scotlands People. The image is exceedingly difficult to read and Ancestry may have had problems in transcribing it. This is my attempt at transcribing the image: This family was living at 17 Canning Street (not Place), Edinburgh. They were: ? KINNAIRD (no relationship given), W[idow], 55, born Peebles. ? [could be Jane] KINNAIRD, daughter, unmarried, 17, family? shop girl, born Edinburgh St Cuthberts Thomas KINNAIRD, son, 13, born Edinburgh St Cuthberts Walter KINNAIRD, son, 10, born Edinburgh St Cuthberts [the mother's name is almost indecipherable but having now looked at Walter's birth certificate (see below), it is definitely 'Marion']. I have just had a look for Walter's birth certificate: he was born Walter Dickson KINNAIRD on 9th July 1860 at George Watson's Hospital Lodge, Lauriston Place, Edinburgh. His parents were Robert KINNAIRD, janitor, George Watson's Hospital (a very well-known Edinburgh school) and Marion DICKSON. So this family do not appear to have been related to your David Hay KINNAIRD, unless Marion remarried to someone bearing the same surname as her first husband. The death of a Robert KINNAIRD aged 54 was registered in the Newington district of Edinburgh in 1869. Rhoda
