I googled Inveresk Institution and found this site: http://www.workhouses.org.uk/index.html?Inveresk/Inveresk.shtml This was just before the National Health Service was introduced in the UK, so I suppose people without much money would have been looked after in institutions such as this. I don't know anything about the history of this distant relative of mine so have no idea whether the poor young woman was chronically sick or a "certified lunatic", or both. I see that that the site was awaiting redevelopment in 2001 which would explain the new housing estate that I saw on the Google walk through.
