Hi, I've been trying to find a birth or baptism record, but to no avail & wondered if anyone could help me please? I believe Mary DALGLEISH was born illegitimately in 1854 in Duddingston, Edinburgh. Her mother's name was Grace GIRVAN, who, after having two more children, Hugh & Susan (who died as a young baby), went on to marry a John DALGLEISH in 1864. Mary appears in the 1861 census living, in Newton, with her grandparents as Mary GIRVAN, but on later records & her marriage certificate she is named as Mary DALGLEISH (I'm not sure if she took her step-father's name, or whether in fact John DALGLEISH was her real father - he was in the Navy, so maybe he wasn't around long enough to get married before!). Mary's marriage certificate also states John DALGLEISH (deceased) as her father & her mother, Grace DALGLEISH was among the witnesses. I cannot find her on Scotlands People, however, on the IGI someone has submitted a Mary DALGLEISH born or baptised on 18 Oct 1854 in Portobello, which would be about right, but there are no contact details. I would greatly appreciate any help as my head is suffering after repeatedly hitting it on this brick wall!. I would be very happy to look up any records in the Surrey family history centre, if required. Many thanks Cindy
