    3. Hi Cindy Just a few thoughts. The pre-1855 'protestant' registrations on Scotlands People (SP) are records of baptisms from the Church of Scotland parish registers. So if Mary was a protestant but her mother was a member of one of the break-away churches, or other protestant religions, then her baptism would be unlikely to appear on SP. There is now an index of the surviving Catholic baptisms on SP. However I think it was fairly unusual in early to mid 19th century Scotland for illegitimate children to be baptised. It probably depended on the Minister of the parish. I have a couple of (illegitimate) children in my tree who were baptised and in both cases the mother's father acted as 'sponsor'. Had Mary been baptised then she would probably have been baptised under her mother's name i.e. Mary Girvan. But again I have in my tree an instance of a child, although illegitimate, being baptised under the father's name. In this instance the child's maternal grandfather acted as 'sponsor'. It was a small country parish and no doubt the Kirk exerted some pressure on the child's father to recognise the child as his. >From 1855 onwards, of course, the (illegitimate) child's birth would/should have been registered probably under the mother's name unless the father was willing to sign the register as the child's father.
