    3. Good evening , Suggest you contact the "Archivist" at Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh www.library.rcsed.ac.uk library@rcsed.ac.uk I have availed myself of his "services" on numerous occasions and he is extremely helpful !! If no record found try contacting the "Archivist" ( John Dallas) at Royal College of Physicians , Edinburgh, http://www.rcpe.ac.uk/library/services.php j.dallas@rcpe.ac.uk Again I have had great help in my researches ! At the time you are interested in , a budding surgeon could be apprenticed to a surgeon and through membership of the "Worshipful Society of Apothecaries", London., eventually become a surgeon You can contact them at http://www.apothecaries.org.uk/index.php?page=97&PHPSESSID=56ba9bd33bf113cb3ccdb7ac263e3cf7 archivist@apothecaries.org If you use email unfortunately full contact details, including home or institutional postal address, must be supplied by the enquirer. Suggest you phone first 020 7248 6648. Have found that WSA are never in a hurry to reply but have been helpful none the less ! Good luck with your research Regards John John D. Stevenson Edinburgh Hi Listers I'm new to the list and am hoping someone can assist/advise with their local nous and know-how. I've been researching a Balleny family in County Durham, whose founding father, William Balleny (born around 1749) may have hailed from Midlothian, possibly Liberton, on the southern fringes of Edinburgh. The first sighting of the name Balleny, spelt in this particular manner in County Durham church records, appears in 1774, when William Balleny, surgeon, and Jane Barass, married at Chester-le-Street on August 23rd 1774. Eight of his nine children's baptisms were registered at Presbyterian churches in Newcastle and South Shields. This rather reinforces his probable Scottish background. General searches have revealed that in the 1700s quite a large cluster of Ballenys, spelling their name in this particular manner, hailed from the Midlothian area. With his surgeon's profession, is it possible that he attended the famous Royal College of Surgeons, in Edinburgh, or were there other avenues he could have taken to become a surgeon? Does the Royal College have any accessible records for around 1768-74ish? "Founding father William", in later life, went on to become a fairly prosperous ship and land owner, he resided and died at Little Greencroft Hall, his estate to the west of Lanchester, County Durham. Lanchester Burial records note he was buried at Lanchester, County Durham, on March 2nd 1826, aged 78. 1. [MIDLOTHIAN] Thomas CRILLY and Catherine BEGEN
    2. John & Yvonne McDonald
    3. Based on the confirmed information that I have, Thomas CRILLY married Catherine BEGEN on February 21st, 1882 at St. Mary's R.C. Church, they both lived at Peter Street, Dundonald, Ayrshire, was witnessed by James GRAHAM and Bridget CLARK. The marriage was registered in Irvine, Extract # 13. Thomas CRILLY was a Chemical Labourer and it is believed that he was born in Dublin, Ireland and Catherine was a Domestic Servant. Thomas CRILLY was previously married to Margaret RUTHERFORD. For Thomas on the marriage extract his parents where Michael CRILLY and Alice MILLIGAN and on his death extract they are listed as Thomas CRILLY and Helen MILLIGAN. For Catherine, on the marriage extract her parents where Thomas BEGEN and Bridget CLARK and on her death extract as John BEGGEN and Bridget S- On searching the 1881 Census for Dundonald, Ayrshire for any of these families I find a Peter Street Priv. Ho. which I believe stands for Private Hospital, as many of the occupations of the neighbours are listed as Labourers (Chemical) is the addresses listed on the marriage extract. My problem is finding the either the CRILLY and the BEGEN families on the 1881 Census, although I think I may have found them, but how do I confirm it. The following families are all neighbours in the Peter Street Private Hospital in the 1881 Census: Catherine CREELY, widow, Head, 46, Ireland. James CREELY, son, 14, Irvine. Thomas CLARK, Head, 46, Ireland, Labr (Chemical) Bridget CLARK, Wife, 44, Ireland Michael CLARK, son, 25, Ireland, Labr (Chemical) Anne Cassidy CLARK, Son's Wife, 22, Ireland John CLARK, Son (Grandson), 1 month, Irvine. James CASSIDY, Lodger, Unmarried, 25, Ireland, Labr (Chemical) Is it be possible, that the family name was recorded as CLARK, instead of CRILLY? Agnes BIGHAM, Widow, Head, 40, Ireland Alexander BIGHAM, Son, 14, Irvine. Agnes BIGHAM, daughter, 10, Irvine. James MULHOLLAND, Lodger, Unmarried, 41, Ireland William BIGHAM, Head, 40, Ireland Elizabeth BIGHAM, Wife, 42, Ireland Elizabeth BIGHAM, daughter, 15, Ireland, Domestic Servant (Occupation and age coincide with Catherine BEGEN on the 1882 marriage extract) Sarah BIGHAM, daughter, 4, Irvine. Could one or both these families be my BEGEN'S? Most importantly how do I confirm it. Any help would be extremely appreciated, thank you John, Pitt Meadows, BC, Canada

    3. I have searched Scotland's people extensively. I have a death printout for Robert BRUCE, which says he was 80 years old when he died in 1895. I have also seen his grave in Kaikohe NZ, which states he died in 1895. So unless it is incorrectly stated on the printout, he must have been born in 1815. His mother (Agnes HENDERSON) and several of her children emigrated to Australia in 1838. From there I assume they came to NZ. I have also found a grave in Auckland where Henry, James , William BRUCE are buried. Also William's wife ( Janet) and their son James BRUCE.) But because of the duplicate dates of birth of Thomas and Robert, I am wondering if they are the same person. 1. [MIDLOTHIAN] Robert Bruce's family

    3. Hello Sylvia I started writing this message about a month ago, saved it to my drafts and forgot about it. Sorry! I had a look to see if I could find out what happened to Robert's father who was dead when the family emigrated in 1838. James BRUCE senior died of jaundice aged "50" in 1832. Place of death is given as "The Dean" in Edinburgh. The death appears in the registers of the parish of St Cuthbert's. There is an area called the Dean Village in central Edinburgh so the family may have moved there from the Canongate. Robert's brother Walter died of "brain inflammation" at The Dean in 1833. I am not sure about Robert's brother James. A James BRUCE born Edinburgh was transported for 14 years to Van Diemen's Land in 1833 for theft and previous conviction but he was 19 and of no fixed abode. He was transported on the Moffatt in January 1834. I will send you images of the death entries off-list. Rhoda

    3. Hello Sylvia The Robert BRUCE that sailed to Australia on the Portland in 1838 was the son of the Agnes HENDERSON and the late James BRUCE. That is confirmed by the ship's manifest (my earlier message of 3 August). He was 13 years old so born in 1825. I doubt you will be able to prove that his birth was registered as Thomas BRUCE born 3 June 1825 but you don't really need to worry about that because you know who Robert's parents were. On the other hand it is a mystery! I do find it a bit strange that the original birth registration for Thomas BRUCE born 3 June 1825 recorded the father quite clearly as JOHN Bruce (mother Agnes HENDERSON) but that the same entry is indexed on Scotlands People twice; firstly under a father's name of John and secondly under a father's name of James. This suggests that someone has asked Scotlands People to correct the index entry. It might be worthwhile contacting them to ask about this. If, as it seems, the parish clerk got the father's name wrong he may also have got the son's name wrong i.e. what was meant to be 'Robert' was entered as 'Thomas'. 2. Sylvia Whautere
    3. I have found records of 7 children born to James BRUCE and Agnes HENDERSON. I can find no evidence that they had a son called Robert. There was a Thomas BRUCE born 3 June 1825 in Canongate, Scotland, but there is also a mention on IGI that Robert BRUCE was born on that day as well. Could he have changed his name? How can I found out that Robert BRUCE's parents were James BRUCE and Agnes HENDERSON. Because I could be following a false lead. Any help appreciated. Sylvia

    3. It would appear that they had eight kids but I don't see a Robert in the group List all Roberts from 1800s in MLN, no Hendersons listed as birth Mom. Also listed all Thomas births in 1800 for MLN and a Thomas does shoe up Did you do a search of Scotlands People website for the names, a search is free only to view the data cost $.00 Anyways hope the info helps in some fashion Bob Cdn -------------------- BRUCE Jane Christening Gender: Female Birth Date: 5 Oct 1807 Birthplace: Edinburgh Parish Edinburgh Midlothian Scotland Recorded in: Edinburgh Midlothian Scotland Father: James BRUCE Mother: Agnes HENDERSON Source: FHL Film 1066688 Dates: 1807 - Could he have changed his name?... ===================

    1. [MIDLOTHIAN] ROBERT PLAIN AND ELIZABETH RITCHIE
    2. pam.groves1
    3. Hello List, I have the Surnames Ritchie, Plain & Cunningham in my family and would love to find out if Robert Plain the Nephew of my 4X Great Grandmother Isobel Plain and who was married to two Elizabeth Ritchie's, were these two Elizabeth Ritchies related in anyway? I know that Robert Plain born 8 Mar 1825 in West Dough, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland was first married on 31 Dec 1847 in Tranent, East Lothian, Scotland to Elizabeth Ritchie born between 1825 & 1826 in Inveresk, Midlothian, Scotland. I have Elizabeth's death certificate which states she was the daughter of James Ritchie (Seaman) in other words Fisherman (Deceased) and Robina Ritchie nee Kerr (Deceased). I have looked for a birth for Elizabeth Ritchie and found one with father named James Ritchie but mothers name was Elizabeth Kerr. Do you think that Elizabeth the mother was nick named Robina having a daughter named Elizabeth. I am also trying to find a link between my Elizabeth/Betsy Ritchie and Elizabeth Plain nee Ritchie. You see after Roberts 1st wife Elizabeth Ritchie died in 1870 Robert Plain then went on to marry my 2X Great Grandmothers sister Elizabeth/Betsy Ritchie born 4 Feb 1838 in Musselburgh, Inveresk, Midlothian, Scotland. Elizabeth (Betsy) Ritchie was the daughter of Alexander Ritchie and Christian/Christina Cunningham. And Christian/Christina Cunningham was the daughter of James Cunningham and Isobel Plain.. Any help would be greatfully received. Thank you in advance for any information I might receive. Kind Regards Pamela J Groves

    3. Hi Mary,            I am sorry I cannot answer your question though undoubtedly I have learnt far more history pursuing the family tree than ever I did in the classroom.   Much of it on these lists though also books I have been enticed to read simply to get the background. Sadly not all of it sticks any more than all of it did as a kid! So someone will know.            You have however prompted me to ask one of my own, so I have adapted the header. John Thompson husband of Barbara Weir was born in abt 1808 and served as a private in the 42nd regiment of Royal highland (Black Watch). he disappears between 1851 when he was on a census and 1859 when his wife remarried.               I think he died in the Crimea but John Thompson is a common name and I would like to be sure and also to know more. can anyone point me in the right direction?  Thankyou                Moira --- On Mon, 31/8/09, Mary Guler <mlmguler@yahoo.com> wrote: From: Mary Guler <mlmguler@yahoo.com> Subject: [MIDLOTHIAN] Historical question To: midlothian@rootsweb.com Date: Monday, 31 August, 2009, 3:41 AM I have found in baptismal records, a reference to the father and the witnesses being "foot soldiers" or "soldiers in Captain And. Stewart's company".  The timeframe is 1675 plus or minus 10 years.  The family is living between Glasgow and Edinburgh, with babies baptised in both locations.  Interestingly, the wife/mother's name (maiden) is Grisell Stewart, and her father is William Stewart, and she has siblings William and Charles Stewart.  She was born in Perthshire, in Methvan.  Her mother isn't named in the baptismal records, but I find a marriage of William Stewart to Grisall Irland (Ireland) in the right timeframe and place, so I believe this is the family.   I know that Stewarts are a distinguished family and come from Perthshire......but are these people part of that family?  I have read that there are 3 clans of Stewarts.  I am also trying to understand what was going on politically.  Wasn't this the era of the Ulster Plantation?  Were these foot soldiers likely conventers?  I wish I had learned more world history while i was in school!   I'd be grateful for any insight .   Mary        ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to MIDLOTHIAN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
