It does seem to be the case that parish registers sometimes used informal variants of names, while civil registration indexes were more likely to use formal versions (though not invariably). Perhaps Marion started insisting on formality more as she grew older! Catherine

    3. Good morning Catherine, In the fishing villages along Firth of Forth , this is my personal research area, the names MARION & MAY were interchangeable . Still have a near 90 year old distant relative christened MARION but has always been known as MAY and we also know her as " Auntie MAIRN " Not a real aunt but in Newhaven we as children referred to an older lady as "Auntie" Regards John John D. 3. Hi listers: I would like to take this opportunity to let you know about the Johnston Newspapers Lothian, who run the Midlothian Advertiser, East Lothian News, Musselburgh News, Lothian Times, & Peebles Times. In basically a desperate last attempt to find living descendants of my grandfathers 1st cousin (William Campbell) who was born in Carstairs and lived most of his life in and around Dalkeith; I contacted the East Lothian News by phone and asked if they had a record of obituaries. They could not help me on the obituary, but after some discussion, the person on the other end of the phone (Ms. Jo Robinson) suggested that I write a short letter for help and they would be pleased to insert it in one of their newspapers. I do not know which one or how many it went in but I very close to immediately, received an e-mail from a great grand daughter of William. I cannot help but thank them for running my letter and for the professional attitude of their staff and in particular Ms. Jo Robinson. I do not think such great organizations and their staff should go unnoticed and unappreciated. I would certainly recommend them to any researcher. Frank Easton Sherwood Park Alberta Canada.

    1. [MIDLOTHIAN] BELL/CAMPBELL - reposting interests
    2. Jacquie
    3. I'm just re-posting my interest regarding James BELL and Marion CAMPBELL. This is some of what I know: According to census information, James BELL was born about 1789 in Fife (one census says Cupar, another says Leslie). He died 13 Jul 1870 in St. George, Edinburgh. His death was registered by his son, Andrew, however the names of James' parents were not included in the registration. According to the 1841 census, Marion CAMPBELL was born about 1791 (not in county) and she died 2 Jul 1847 in St. Cuthbert's, Edinburgh. I have found the following offspring for James BELL and Marion CAMPBELL: 1) Mary, born abt 1819 in Dunbar, East Lothian and died 6 May 1887 in St. Cuthbert's Poorhouse. I can't find a marriage for her but on her death registration it indicated she was married to George McLATCHIE. I know of one daughter, Marion (born abt 1848-died 1915, married George Wood); 2) William, born abt 1823 in West Barns, East or Midlothian and died 14 Jan 1890 in Blythswood, Glasgow. He married Catherine DONALDSON on 18 Nov 1844 in Glasgow. They had one daughter named Isabella (born abt 1842-died ?); 3) James, born 19 Oct 1824 in St. Cuthbert's, Edinburgh. I don't have any additional information regarding James; 4) Thomas, born abt 1826 in Midlothian. I have him living with James and Marion on the 1841 census and nothing after that; 5) Elizabeth, born 29 Oct 1827 in St. Cuthbert's, Edinburgh and died 22 Feb 1881 in Partick, Glasgow. She married James JOHNSTON on 2 Jun 1854 in Leith. They had five children, William (born 1555-died 1856), Marion (born 1856-died 1864), Euphemia (born 1858-died 1909, unmarried), Jemima (born 1860-died 1916, married Samuel Mulholland) and Elizabeth (born 1862-died 1874). Euphemia Galloway JOHNSTON was my g-grandmother. I have quite a bit of information regarding James, Elizabeth and their children; 6) Andrew, born 4 Dec 1831 in St. Cuthbert's, Edinburgh and died 30 May 1875 in Cannongate, Edinburgh. He married Joan LOWRIE/LAURIE on 16 Feb 1855. They had six children, James (born 1855-died 1855), Andrew (1857-died 1914, married Helen Proud), Robert (born 1859-died ?), James (born 1861-died 1924, married Agnes Snape), Joan (born 1864-died 1890, married William Kirkwood) and Marion (born 1866-died 1945, married Hugh Nelson). I haven't found a marriage entry for James BELL and Marion CAMPBELL. I have seen the marriage listed in the OPR for James BELL and Minny CAMPBELL in 1812. While it seems unlikely to be them, the fact that it indicates that Minny Campbell's father, James, was a labourer in Dunbar and James and Marion's daughter, Mary, was born in Dunbar is just a little too coincidental for me to rule it out completely. It should be noted though that every conclusive document that I have, Marion is never referred to by any other name than Marion. If anyone has a connection or information on this BELL/CAMPBELL line, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. Thanks. Jacquie Winnipeg, MB Canada

    3. Greetings Listers, In the Scottish Ecclesiastical Record of Ministers, Non Juror Bishop of Edinburgh, Arthur Miller, is confirmed as married to Elizabeth Calderwood and that he died 9^th October 1727 in his 78^th year. If being in his 78^th year was correct, he would have been born in 1649 or early 1650. Can anyone please advise any details of Arthur and Elizabeth in their earlier years, such as birth, christening, marriage, parents etc.or direct me to a site where I might find that information. I am unable to confirm christening or parents of either from the IGI. Margaret and Elizabeth Millar are both shown as his daughters. Margaret married Arthur Forrest in 1708. He was later Captain , Commodore and Admiral in the Royal Navy and served at the West Indian Station at Jamaica until 1770. Any help greatly appreciated. Doug Forrest Burnie, Tasmania, Australia.

The closest I can get from GENUKI Scotland is John SPOTTISWOODE who was born in Greenbank, Mid Calder and later became Archbishop of St Andrews. I know there is a family connection but am keen to get an historical perspective of the area and where the various family members may have lived, Cramond being another Spottiswoode place of interest. 3. Jan, SPOTTISWOODE is a large house about 4 miles E of Lauder, OS sheet 74 "Kelso". I assume that the area all round was a large estate at one time - maybe even still. Interestingly, 1 mile W is a hamlet called Cambridge, where my wife's GrGrGrandfather was the Blacksmilth in 1851 and 1861 censuses. We visited there a few years ago and found the original smithy. The local joke apparently was, when asked where they were educated, the reply was "Cambridge" !! If you would like, I could scan the Victorian 1" map for you.
