    3. Hello Carolyn Can't really help with what happened to this family. I couldn't find them in Scotland after 1901 nor could I find any deaths in England for John E W Jack or his son. I did notice, however, that according to the birth index on Scotlands People, his son was registered under the name of Edward, and not Frederick. I had a look on Ancestry's passenger lists but couldn't find them. But I may have missed them. I don't believe that Ancestry has transcribed 20th Century passenger lists for Australia, New Zealand and South Africa but they can be found on Find My Past. I had a look on there but there were too many John Jacks, age unknown, plus a few possible matches which you might like to pursue (it is a pay site). 3. Rhoda - Thank you for your bit of research, particularly the tip about Frederick being registered under the name of Edward, instead of Frederick. I will follow that up myself on Scotland's People. I have searched the migration records at Find My Past but so far have come up empty. I will search again using the son's name as Edward instead of Fred/Frederick. Thanks again. Carolyn

    3. Ronald The attached link is to a page on "Scotlands Places" which refers to an early 19th Century Plan of the Estate of Dalkeith including Newfarm. There is no digital image of the Plan but if you wanted to view the Plan the advice is to contact the NAS quoting the Site ID (given at the top of the webpage). http://www.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/search_item/index.php?service=NAS&id=RHP3678 Rhoda

    3. Hello again, Thanks to all the listers who replied re SHILLINGLAW. Rhoda, I am fairly sure that the William who died at Dalkeith in 1809 (one of the five?) is my man, but no age is shown. Simply that he was a ' labourer at Newfarm.' Incidentally scotlandspeople have mis-read the year. I have examined the film and the year is '1807'. I did the decent thing and e-mailed them to point out the error. They told me to take it up with GROS. I told them to get off their backsides! Bob, I'm lost in admiration of (a) your industry, and (b) your technical ability in putting all that information on the screen. I'm beyond help as far as that sort of thing goes, being of a certain age, and posting my little bit on this list was the acme of my computing career! Your list includes Philip's known siblings (first four on your list) plus Philip's children born at Chislehurst Kent. Not shown is an earlier daughter, Ann, born 1808 at Bray, Berkshire (in IGI), and Elizabeth (c.1820) and Martha (c.1825) these last two not being found in any known parish-register. However, we believe they were born at Aberdalgie, Perthshire, as Philip was working at Dupplin between 1820 and 1841. The other 'Shillinglaw' baptisms, etc, in Kent don't appear to be directly connected with mine, despite the apparent geographical nearness. Liz, I've noted your interest re a Thomas SHILLINGLAW and will respond should anything come to my notice. Thank you. Ronald.

    3. Hello Ronald Scotlands People lists the deaths/burials of 5 William Shillinglaws in Midlothian between 1802 and 1847. One of those was in Dalkeith in 1809. Have you looked at those to see if your Philip's father is one of them? 3. Hello all, this is my first contact with the Midlothian list. In 1768 William SHILLINGLAW and Ann SCOUGALL were married at Channelkirk. During the next twenty years they had four children baptised at Dalkeith, including Philip SHILLINGLAW (1777 ) who is my ancestor. Nothing is known of Philip until 30 years later when in 1807, he married Sarah PRINCE at St Martin in the Fields, London. Thereafter, he worked as a gardener at Bray, Berkshire; Camden Place Chislehurst, Kent; then Dupplin Castle, Aberdalgie, Perthshire (gardener to the Earl of Kinnoul ). In 1841, Philip, then aged 64, emigrated to Victoria, Australia, with son William, and daughters, Caroline, Elizabeth and Martha. It is presumed that his wife Sarah had died before 1841, but no record has been found. What was he doing for the first thirty years of his life? I fancy he was probably working as a gardener in Dalkeith area, possibly the Dalkeith Palace Gardens (given his subsequent carreer). Can anyone help me fill in this blank period please. I have been told that when Philip's brother William died at Pathhead in the 1860s the death-entry described their father, William, as a 'soldier.' ( that's the William mentioned in the first line of this posting.) Does anyone have any information on that? I do know that there were other SHILLINGLAWs in Dalkeith during the period of interest, but I don't know if they were related. Regards, Ronald Smith at Romford, Essex, U.K.

    3. Hello Mary I think there was an area called Valleyfield in the Tollcross area of Edinburgh. There is a Valleyfield Street in the area today and apparently there used to be a paper mill at Valleyfield. Castlebarns was an area lying to both sides of the present-day Lothian Road, just north of Tollcross. Googling it tells me that Castlebarns was an area for the accommodation of the Scottish Court when the King lived in Edinburgh Castle but it may have started off as a grange or farm attached to the Castle. If you put "Wright's Houses" in Google you will find the place on Google Maps. It is just off the Meadows in the centre of Edinburgh and I imagine got its name from a Mr Wright. But someone may know better. (Using the Google walkthrough made me feel quite homesick. I used to walk through that part of The Meadows every weekday afternoon on my way home from school!) I have found it as two words, as well as one word, and think that it might be an area that was once the castle barns of Edinburgh Castle. If someone was a "castle soldier" in 1751, in the Edinburgh area, is it safe to assume that the reference is to Edinburgh Castle? What were Wrighthouses? Would it be safe to assume that "Mr. Matheson" was a surgeon, a reverend, or of some other educated profession? And, lastly, is there an area known as "Valley <something>" in the Edinburgh region? I apologize for all the questions, but this is such a learned group......I know that this is the right place to ask these questions :o) Thank you in advance of your answer! Mary

    3. Hi Mary, If you check out http://edinburghbookshelf.org.uk/volume10/page166.html you will find reference to Castle Barns. It appears to have been the Home Farm for Edinburgh Castle. I would imagine that "Castle soldier", would refer to Edinburgh Castle. Could your Valley**** be Valleyfield? Quote from http://living.scotsman.com/books/Prisoners-from-Napoleon-All-Men.4721137.jp - "William Chambers, who would grow up to establish with his brother Robert the eponymous publishing empire and become twice Lord Provost of Edinburgh, was looking at Valleyfield Depot, a prisoner-of-war camp holding French and other soldiers and sailors captured in the Napoleonic Wars raging at the time - and the place was going like a fair. "The shops in the village were shut," he would write 60-odd years later. "From the church was heard the voice of the preacher. Looking down on this hive of living beings, there was not among them a vestige of the ordinary calm of Sunday - only Dimanche!" There are still streets in Edinburgh bearing the name "Valleyfield." Without a Christian name for Mr Matheson, it is hard to discover what his profession would be, but I would imagine that he would be a "Learned gentleman", since he is referred to as Mr rather than by his Christian name. Hope that this helps a little with your query. Margaret
